Sony Rebooting the Spider-Man franchise, say goodbye to Tobey Maguire and Sam Raimi

I’m a little devastated about this news.  I’m not completely upset that Sony is getting a new director, but I’m really angry that they’re starting over.  It’s too soon and I think there’s still stories that need to be told before we start rebooting the whole thing.  And get the kid out of high-school.  But Sony announced today that SPIDER-MAN 4 is, in fact, not going to happen.  Instead, they’re going to reboot the entire franchise without Sam Raimi, Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst.  According to Sony, they’re returning to Peter Parker’s roots and following him as he deals with teenage issues and superhero powers.  Sony is aiming for a summer, 2012 release date but no stars or directors are currently being mentioned for the film.

I was probably in the minority, but I really thought Sam Raimi was going to hit a huge home run with SPIDER-MAN 4.  At the very least, they could have kept with SPIDER-MAN 4 and just re-cast everything like WB did with the Batman franchise.  I think this is bad news for everyone and a severe blow to one of the most beloved superheroes of all time.
