Joss Whedon to direct Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans in The Avengers

Sit back and re-read that title again.  Doesn’t it make you smile?  In what might be the perfect culmination of every fanboys dreams, the great Joss Whedon is reportedly in final negotiations to direct the highly anticipated Marvel film THE AVENGERS.  As all of you know, THE AVENGERS would see several of Marvel’s most popular characters onscreen as they team up to fight bad guys.  Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Evans as Captain America, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and Chris Hemsworth as Thor are the actors and characters we know for sure will be appearing in the film.  There has been speculation (and hope) that Edward Norton would reprise The Hulk in the film as well.  The film already has a release date of May 2012.

I’ve heard this rumor for a while, but I’m a little shocked it’s actually happening.  I’ve been a huge Joss Whedon fan and I didn’t think I could be any more excited for THE AVENGERS, but I guess I was wrong.
