Shrek 4 dominates as MacGruber fails at the box office
Posted by: Brad Sturdivant
Kids movies always do well, so it’s no surprise that SHREK FOREVER AFTER pulled in $71.2 million on opening weekend. To put it in perspective, the first SHREK did $42 million, SHREK 2 did $108 million and SHREK THE THIRD did $128 million. So even though #4 did well, maybe this is a sign the ogre is wearing thin on audiences. The other new movie to open this weekend was MACGRUBER, which managed a paltry $4.1 million. I can’t say I’m surprised at that since it seemed like there weren’t many fans of the SNL skit to begin with. I have to give the marketing team some credit though, because the previews and TV spots made the film look very funny.
Next week is a big one with SEX AND THE CITY 2 exploding onto the big screen along with a buff Jake Gyllenhaal in PRINCE OF PERSIA: THE SANDS OF TIME. Something tells me that 4 50 year-old women will easily crush Jake G. at the box office.
1) Shrek Forever After $71,250,000
2) Iron Man 2 $26,600,000
3) Robin Hood $18,700,000
4) Letters to Juliet $9,100,000
5) Just Wright $4,225,000
6) MacGruber $4,100,000
7) Date Night $2,825,000
8) A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010) $2,285,000
9) How to Train Your Dragon $1,850,000
10) Kites $952,000
