Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart reach highest ever midnight opening with Twilight: Eclipse

Posted by: Brad Sturdivant

We learned earlier today that TWILIGHT: ECLIPSE broke the record for widest release in Hollywood history with showings on over 4,416 screens.  Now, early word is that the film holds the record for highest midnight opening in history, beating the record held by TWILIGHT: NEW MOON.  Eclipse has managed over $30 million, just with the midnight screenings alone.  And we haven’t even gotten to the regular showings tonight.  Theaters have been getting creative on how to handle the record sell-out crowds, some of which added in early morning shows to accommodate the demand.  I thought the opening for SEX AND THE CITY was huge as far as get-togethers for women go, but girls around the world are turning the Eclipse opening into a huge event with camp-outs and slumber parties.  As if it were ever in question; it’s official that Twilight fever is at an all time high.

What might be surprising to non Twi-hards is that the film is getting generally positive buzz from critics, at least compared to the first two.  And once again, in case you’re not aware, the film stars Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, Ashley Greene, Taylor Lautner, Kellan Lutz, Nikki Reed and Dakota Fanning.
