Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart impress with final Twilight: Eclipse box office numbers

Posted by: Brad Sturdivant

As is the policy in Hollywood to call something “final” before the day is even through, the “final” box office numbers for THE TWILIGHT SAGA: ECLIPSE are in.  To recap, the film had the widest release, the biggest midnight opening and the biggest Wednesday opening of all time.  Early numbers put it on pace to beat the all time Fourth of July weekend record, which is held by SPIDER-MAN 2’s $180 million, but it ell off quite a bit after its stellar opening.  All total, the film made $68.5 million on Wednesday, $24.2 million on Thursday and then closed the weekend with $28.6, $23.9, $13.7 and $16.4 million estimated for Monday.  The six day total will close out somewhere around $175.3 million.  So it not only failed to match Spidey, but it didn’t beat THE TWILIGHT SAGA: NEW MOON, which opened over Thanksgiving with $179 million in six days.  However, being disappointed because the film failed to make an additional 4.7 million is ridiculous considering everything over $68 million is pure profit for the studio.

So now that the studio has a summer opening and a Thanksgiving opening on their books, I wonder if it will change their thinking with the release of THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN films.  Either way, anyone with a cut of the back-end profits is going to be rich after those movies are released.  As you know, the series stars Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, Jackson Rathbone, Ashley Greene, Taylor Lautner, Kellan Lutz, Nikki Reed and Dakota Fanning.
