Twilight: Eclipse can't keep up with Despicable Me at the box office

Posted by: Brad Sturdivant

I have to admit that I’m a little shocked at the numbers for Universal’s DESPICABLE ME.  I understand that a kid’s movie will always do well, no matter when it’s released, but DESPICABLE ME didn’t have any recognizable characters, poor previews and very little buzz surrounding it.  Yes it had Steve Carell, but kids don’t care about that.  So for it to not only beat THE TWILIGHT SAGA: ECLIPSE, but to beat it by such a wide margin, I’m surprised.  And although I shouldn’t be surprised at the huge drop-off for Eclipse, 52% seems like a lot given the crazy fan loyalty for the films.  Apparently, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart don’t merit repeat viewings.  But I’m happy to see the quirky independent dramedy CYRUS crack the top ten.

Next week is INCEPTION and for all intent and purposes, it should be #1.  But most people (including myself) still don’t understand what the movie is about and American audiences tend to shy away from things they don’t understand.  I think the movie looks fantastic, but you throw Leonardo DiCaprio and Christopher Nolan on the same movie and I’m going to see it no matter what.
