Jason Segel writing romantic comedy called Five Year Engagement

Posted by: Kristy Sturdivant

This writer thinks Jason Segel is one of the funniest and most clever guys around and steadily rising in ranks because of his efforts in bringing back The Muppets. So when I heard that he was working on another romantic comedy, it made my heart sing.  In a year when we have gotten terrible romantic comedies such as THE BACK-UP PLAN, SHE’S OUT OF MY LEAGUE and WHEN IN ROME, it’s a breath of fresh air to hear that Segel is working on a romantic comedy, called FIVE YEAR ENGAGEMENT, that he wants to hit theaters next summer.  Here’s what he says

Our goal is ANNIE HALL or WHEN HARRY MET SALLY and if we get within their stratosphere of substance, we will be happy. It really dissects relationships and aims to show how complicated they are over a long period of time. This is a five-year period and in that time things change and morph and the power dynamic shifts and people wane and eyes wonder and you question everything and this movie is about that in a funny way, I hope.

After his success in FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL, I’ve no doubt he knows what it takes to do amazing things with this genre. If he can get his film off the ground (they are supposed to begin shooting in April) by next summer his 2011 will look pretty stellar since The Muppet movie will open on Thanksgiving weekend (which was moved up from a Christmas release).
