Matt Damon confirms Steven Soderbergh is retiring after Man From U.N.C.L.E.

For years now, Steven Soderbergh has been telling everyone that will listen that he will not direct movies when he passes 50 years-old.  He’s made the same complaints that many indie-turned-Hollywood directors have made in that they hate the system, the pressure, etc.  But when it comes to retirement in Hollywood, no one ever takes you seriously because it always feels like a comeback is right around the corner.  But maybe Steven Soderbergh will be different and he seems set to come through with his retirement promise after he finishes MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. (given his slate, that film will put him over 50 when he finishes), which may or may not star George Clooney.  According to Matt Damon, “He’s retiring, he’s been talking about it for years and it’s getting closer…He wants to paint and he says he’s still young enough to have another career.”

So there you go.  Matt Damon is currently filming CONTAGION with Steven Soderbergh, so he should know if Soderbergh is still talking about it.  CONTAGION hits theaters next October.
