Fraggle Rock director Cory Edwards bails on project
Posted by: Kristy Sturdivant
The movie version of FRAGGLE ROCK has been hovering around a production start date for about a year, but director Cory Edwards is fed up with The Weinstein Company sitting on the project too long and has jumped ship. The Weinstein Company wanted to get another writer in there to make the movie a little “edgier”, but I guess they just never got around to the project, or thought that it wasn’t worth their while. So for the time being FRAGGLE ROCK is dead in the water. Here is what Edwards had to say about the situation, “There’s nothing to report except that The Weinstein Company has everything they need to move forward, and the ball is in their court. They’ve talked about getting a new writer, which I’m willing to do. They’ve talked about starting over from scratch, which I’m willing to do. But I have not heard a peep from their camp in almost a year.” Edwards goes on to say that it’s better that the project die like this than put a bad movie out there and do injustice to the Fraggle Rock fans and I have to agree.
So now I ask you gentle readers, do you still want to see a FRAGGLE ROCK movie after all the junk Hollywood has put out over the last couple years? One could say that they are taking our childhood heroes and favorites and killing them on the big screen (ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS, THE SMURFS and TRANSFORMERS- although this one is debatable), so do you mind if they do the same to FRAGGLE ROCK?
UPDATE: Mr. Edwards shot us an email to clarify that he has not “bailed” on the project:
I’m surprised that you’ve reported that I am “bailing” on the project. I’ve done no such thing. As I stated in my blog, I continue to patiently await any new steps taken by the studio. My deal to direct still stands. I am focusing on other projects until the studio decides to move ahead on the project. But I have not quit the project in any way, and am ready to proceed as soon as anyone at the studio level would like to do so. I just want to get the right information out there. Thanks again for covering my blog. Watch it for future announcements! – Cory Edwards
So it looks like Cory will still do the project when The Weinsteins are ready to move forward. That’s definitely good news and hopefully The Weinsteins will greenlight this project sooner rather than later.
