Hop jumps past Source Code at the box office
Posted by: Brad Sturdivant
There are no surprises this weekend as the kid-friendly HOP captured first place at the box office and the Swiss-cheese-plot SOURCE CODE came in a distant second. Even though HOP seemed to have grabbed every cheap joke it could possibly find, the fact remains that kids need something to see at the box office and this weekend didn’t give them many choices. As for SOURCE CODE, we have further proof that Jake Gyllenhaal, although a fine actor, can’t open a movie to $20 million or more. I know the guy has his fans, but general audiences don’t flock to see his movies. INSIDIOUS was the other big movie this weekend and it did fine with a third place showing.
Next week sees the release of HANNA (which was pretty good, by the way), YOUR HIGHNESS and ARTHUR. The problem here is that YOUR HIGHNESS and ARTHUR appeal to the same crowd and chances are good that neither will do very well. I would be looking for HOP to make it two in a row. Note: the numbers below will be updated when they become final.
1. Hop $38m
2. Source Code $14.8m
3. Insidious $13.2m
4. Diary of a Wimpy Kid 2 $10.2m
5. Limitless $9.3m
6. The Lincoln Lawyer $39.7m
7. Sucker Punch $6m
8. Rango $6m
9. Paul $4m
10. Battle: Los Angeles $3.5m
