Alan Arkin the first to join Argo for director Ben Affleck

It’s still hard to get used to the notion that Ben Affleck is a director now, but even harder to get used to the fact that he’s actually a great director. After GONE BABY GONE and THE TOWN, he’s officially on my list of must-see directors. Next up for Mr. Affleck is the very original ARGO, which is a true story about a group of American diplomats in 1979 that were rescued after being held hostage in Tehran by a group of Iranian extremists. That alone isn’t too different, but the CIA and Canadian government pulled off the hostage rescue by pretending to be a Hollywood film crew that was scouting out locations.
The first to join the cast is the always great Alan Arkin (LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE), who will be playing Lester Siegel, a former O.S.S. spy that will be playing the movie’s producer. His character is described as “equal parts bookie and rabbi”. For some reason, that just makes perfect sense for Alan Arkin.
