Judging by the first trailer for OUR IDIOT BROTHER, I thought they were going to try to market this as a straight-up comedy and then surprise people with a message once they sold the ticket. But after watching the second trailer, it seems they’re going to be upfront about it. I wasn’t a big fan the first time around, but I’m buying what they’re selling with the second trailer. I think they’re balancing a delicate line between having Paul Rudd’s character annoying and sweet and I hope the lessons-learned payoff at the end turns out better than what we see in the trailer, but overall I have hopes this will work well. And it’s nice to see Paul Rudd in a role that will stretch his acting as opposed to always playing the straight-laced good guy.
The film stars Paul Rudd, Elizabeth Banks, Rashida Jones, Adam Scott, Zooey Deschanel, Emily Mortimer, Hugh Dancy, T.J. Miller and Steve Coogan. Jesse Peretz (THE EX) is directing the film that hits theaters on August 26th.
