Luke Evans and Benedict Cumberbatch confirmed for The Hobbit

With THE DARK KNIGHT RISES hogging all the casting announcements, I had almost forgotten that another huge tent-pole film from the folks over at Warner Brothers was also finishing up its casting. As many fans are eagerly anticipating THE HOBBIT, today comes news that future A-list actor Luke Evans has signed on to play Bard the Bowman in the two-part films. Of course, Bard plays a much larger role in the second film as he’s the one responsible for taking out Smaug the dragon. Oh, and as it so happens, it was also announced today that Benedict Cumberbatch would be voicing and doing motion capture work for Smaug.
The first part will be called THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY and the second THE HOBBIT: THERE AND BACK AGAIN, with the first opening on December 14th, 2012. The Peter Jackson directed film stars Martin Freeman, Andy Serkis, Hugo Weaving, Stephen Fry, Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen, Ian Holm, Brett McKenzie, Orlando Bloom and Cate Blanchett.
