Will Smith wants Denzel Washington for his Katrina movie, The American Can

Will Smith has been trying to get THE AMERICAN CAN off the ground for some time now, but he may be taking a step closer by pitching the idea to Denzel Washington. Although Big Willy was once going to star in it himself, it seems he may just stick to producing and leave the drama to Denzel. The film is the true story of ex-marine John Keller who led the residents of the American Can apartment complex during hurricane Katrina and protected their homes from looters. He managed to save dozens of lives and was featured in the documentary ‘New Orleans: My Home, My Life, My Love’.
Personally, after watching the first season of HBO’s ‘Treme’ and a few of Spike Lee’s HBO documentaries about Katrina (like ‘If God is Willing and da Creek Don’t Rise’), I’m about Katrina-d out. I know it was a horrible, horrible tragedy, but we may have already covered everything about the disaster that needs to be put on the big (or small) screen.
