Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 already shattering box office records

Director David Yates won over this mild Harry Potter fan with a fantastic final film to the franchise and it looks like the film is impressing just about everyone.  Critics seem to all agree that this is a great film (read our review of HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS PART 2) and now it’s well on its way to setting some all time box office records.  The first one under its belt is the midnight opening record, with the film bringing in $43.5 million domestically. To put it in perspective, the previous midnight record was from THE TWILIGHT SAGA: ECLIPSE, which brought in a mere $30 million.  But Potter isn’t stopping there.  The film is on pace today to break the highest single day record with more than $80 million, besting New Moon’s $72.7 million.  But the record to keep an eye on is the highest weekend gross, currently held by THE DARK KNIGHT’s $158.4 million.

I actually received a few calls Thursday night from friends that wanted to see it at midnight but couldn’t find tickets and then their local theater actually having 3 a.m. screenings to accommodate the demand.  I can’t say I remember a film that has been this highly anticipated and actually lived up to the hype.
