Dwight Yoakam will face Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer in The Lone Ranger

Country music star Dwight Yoakam is a creepy looking dude, so him being cast as the villain in Gore Verbinski’s THE LONE RANGER isn’t much of a surprise.  Yoakam played a great bad guy in David Fincher’s underrated PANIC ROOM and has small roles in films like WEDDING CRASHERS and CRANK, but this would be his first major role in a big budget film.  Yoakam will be playing Butch Cavendish, the leader of a murdering group of bad guys that terrorize the Old West.  Yoakam isn’t the only actor joining the film, Barry Pepper looks set to play Captain Fuller, the head of the Seventh Calvary and James Badge Dale is in talks to play the Lone Ranger’s brother, Dan Reid, the leader of the Texas Rangers.  And frequent Depp co-star Helena Bonham Carter is in negotiations to play the madame of a brothel.

These actors join a cast that includes Johnny Depp, Armie Hammer, Tom Wilkinson and Ruth Wilson.  All of these casting choices seem okay, but none of them get me any more excited for the film than a slight curiosity.  I’ve lost faith in Depp and the rest of the cast either strike out too often or don’t have enough roles under their belt to impress.  The film will start shooting this fall and will hit theaters December 21th, 2012.
