Michael Shannon confirms that General Zod's costume for Man of Steel will have some CGI elements

I don’t mind a little CGI. Just not an overload of creepy characters that are solely CGI. Yes, I’m talking to you, Robert Zemeckis.

So how about a little CGI for General Zod’s costume in MAN OF STEEL? At first, Zod himself, Michael Shannon did not want to get an any sort of motion capture suit. He told director Zack Snyder that it would be uncomfortable and as far from intimidating as possible. Snyder tells him that he completely understands. But wait a minute, Snyder is all about effects and what not so it was inevitable that the director would have to go back on what he said.

Shannon explained what happened: “Then I showed up and he’s like, ‘Dude, I swear to God, it’s going to be so bad ass when we done. Trust me, it’s going to be wicked.’ And, you know, people understand and you get used to it. The first day, you feel like you’re getting rushed by a fraternity… and then it wears off the next day. Because I’m not the only one wearing one – there are other people wearing them, too.”

The suit won’t be entirely CGI. It will have some natural aspects to it. But Zod is from a completely different planet, you can’t expect him to have some ordinary costume. So what you saw on set was a reality. Shannon was wearing a mo-cap suit.
