First Look at Helena Bonham Carter in Great Expectations

Posted by: Zack Bruce

There have been several film adaptations of Charles Dickens’ GREAT EXPECTATIONS. The last one I recall was that late 90s version with Ethan Hawke and Gwyneth Paltrow. That one was fairly decent. Anything directed by Alfonso Cuarón has to be good, right?

Another version of the film has been adapted by Mike Newell (HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE). Helena Bonham Carter, Robbie Coltrane, Sally Hawkins, David Walliams, and Jeremy Irvine will star in the film. Carter plays Miss Havisham, an embittered spinster who sits in her mouldering mansion still wearing the wedding dress she wore when she was jilted at the altar; she has trained her adopted daughter Estella to break men’s hearts just as her heart was broken. We have our first photo of Carter in the role and she looks creepy.

At first I didn’t think these were for GREAT EXPECTATIONS but the novel did have that haunted feel as did the character of Havisham. So actually this look fits fairly well.
