George Clooney looking to write, direct and star in Monuments Men

George Clooney

George Clooney is an international superstar and arguably one of the biggest stars around right now, but when you stop and think about it, he doesn’t really have any commercially successful films outside of the Ocean’s trilogy.  I’m not sure what that means, but I’m impressed that he’s managed to keep his superstar status and still do the quality, smaller films he’s been doing.  With both THE DESCENDANTS and THE IDES OF MARCH picking up steam this awards season, his status should only continue to grow.  And oh yeah, he’s also a decent director, even though none of his directorial efforts haven’t found box office success either.

But next up for Mr. Clooney is the big screen adaptation of Robert M. Edsel’s WWII book, ‘The Monuments Men: Allied Heroes, Nazi Thieves, and the Greatest Treasure Hunt in History’.  It’s a fascinating true story and focuses on normal, often unarmed American and British men that banned together to “steal back” the cherished art that Hitler was stealing from around the world.  The interesting thing is that the men were regular guys and made up of museum curators, art historians and others.  Clooney hasn’t signed on officially yet, but if he does, then this will definitely be his most ambitious project to date.
