Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer and Eva Green star in Tim Burton's Dark Shadows trailer

Johnny Depp in the Dark Shadows trailer

We’ve seen so many images from the latest Johnny Depp and Tim Burton collaboration, DARK SHADOWS, that I sometimes forget we haven’t seen a trailer yet.  But today the trailer was debuted to the world via the talk show ‘Ellen’ and no, I have no idea why a movie starring Johnny Depp and directed by Tim Burton would debut its trailer on a midday talk show.  It’s almost like they want this movie to fail.  But anyway, the first trailer is out and I guess it proves that you can’t judge a movie by its plot description.  For some reason, I was thinking this was going to be dark and dreary, more like SWEENEY TODD.  But the trailer makes it play more like BEETLEJUICE or EDWARD SCISSORHANDS.  I’m definitely digging what I’m seeing in the trailer, specifically Johnny Depp getting back to his quirky roots and actually acting.

DARK SHADOWS is actually loosely based on the TV show of the same name that aired in the late 60’s.  The movie version is about Barnabas Collins (Johnny Depp) who in 1752 continues his streak of breaking the hearts of women everywhere when he seduces and leaves Agelique, who happens to be a witch.  Angelique exacts her revenge on Barnabas by turning him into a vampire and burying him alive.  He wakes up 220 years later, in the 1970’s, only to find his house in complete shambles.  Like I said, on the surface, it sounds like a dark and depressing tale, typical of recent Johnny Depp and Tim Burton films.  But watch the trailer.  It actually looks pretty great.

Along with Johnny Depp, the film stars Michelle Pfeiffer, Eva Green, Jonny Lee Miller, Chloe Grace Moretz, Helena Bonham Carter, Jackie Earle Haley, Christopher Lee and Bella Heathcote.  DARK SHADOWS opens in theaters everywhere on May 11th.  And as much as everyone loves Johnny Depp, I know they like him better when he’s in costume.
