Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis offered the lead roles in Jupiter Ascending

Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis

What a year Channing Tatum is having.  He was part of the ensemble action film HAYWIRE with Steven Soderbergh, which opened to mostly positive reviews.  Then he starred in the very successful THE VOW with Rachel McAdams.  Then Channing Tatum received rave reviews for his comedic work in 21 JUMP STREET (which might mark the first time he’s received positive reviews for his acting).  Oh, and it’s only March.  Channing Tatum still has a part in G.I. JOE: RETALIATION coming this summer, as well as a reunion with Steven Soderbergh in MAGIC MIKE, which is based off his own life as a male stripper.  Yep, it must be pretty good to be Channing Tatum right now.  Channing Tatum’s good 2012 makes it easier to forget about SON OF NO ONE and THE EAGLE from 2011.

If The Wachowski’s and Warner Bros. have their way, Channing Tatum will star in the science fiction film JUPITER ASCENDING.  This is normally the part of the news story where I tell you what the film is about, but in typical Wachowski fashion, we know next to nothing, other than it’s a science fiction story.  If anything, there’s been more news surrounding the casting than the actual story.  At one point, The Wachowski’s were dead set on having Natalie Portman star in the film, but she’s tied up with Terrence Malick for the better part of 2012.  And who do you call when you can’t get Natalie Portman?  Mila Kunis.  It looks like Portman’s BLACK SWAN co-star is being sought for the female lead in the film, which could start filming later this year.

I probably like Channing Tatum more than most critics, but I’d be very careful putting him in any sort of role that required him to pull off dramatic emotions.  He was unbearable in DEAR JOHN.  But The Wachowski’s know what they’re doing when it comes to science fiction. (Deadline)
