Looper trailer: watch Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon-Levitt try to kill each other

About two-thirds of the way through the first LOOPER trailer, Jeff Daniels says “this time travel crap fries your brain like an egg” and that’s the best way to describe how Hollywood has mishandled the notion of time travel in film over the years. So I’m always skeptical about time travel films, even if they do star current it-boy Joseph Gordon-Levitt squaring off against action and science fiction veteran Bruce Willis. Coincidentally, Willis starred in 12 MONKEYS, which I consider one of the best time travel movies ever made. With all of that said, LOOPER looks like a lot of fun and a lot more stylish than what I was expecting. It seems director and writer Rian Johnson has done a good job with what he has, but it remains to be seen if America will buy into it.
In LOOPER, time travel will be invented – but it will be illegal and only available on the black market. When the mob wants to get rid of someone, they will send their target 30 years into the past, where a “looper” – a hired gun, like Joe (Gordon-Levitt) – is waiting to mop up. Joe is getting rich and life is good… until the day the mob decides to “close the loop,” sending back Joe’s future self (Willis) for assassination. So yeah, it’s ripe with potential continuity pitfalls, but check out the trailer and judge for yourself; I think this one will be a fun time.
LOOPER stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bruce Willis, Emily Blunt, Jeff Daniels, Paul Dano, Piper Perabo, Jeff Daniels and Garret Dillahunt. I was pleased to see Blunt and Daniels get some screen time in the LOOPER trailer and given the complexity of the film, I’m sure we’ll see a few more trailers released before the final product comes out. LOOPER hits theaters everywhere on September 23rd.
