Weekend box office: The Avengers holds back Dark Shadows
It’s been another fantastic outing at the weekend box office for Joss Whedon’s superhero film THE AVENGERS as it still holds the #1 place at the box office, easily holding back the biggest challenger, DARK SHADOWS. We all know THE AVENGERS is huge, and we knew that before this weekend even hit. But I’ve never heard of a film grossing $100 million in its second weekend. So make that the highest opening weekend ever with just over $207 million and now the highest second weekend ever with just over $100 million.
Not that anyone should be shocked, but DARK SHADOWS is struggling to find an audience in the shadow of THE AVENGERS. The film opened up to $28 million, which to be honest, isn’t that bad for a Tim Burton original. I think it would have done much better opening without competition, say in late January or early February, but I’m guessing Warner Bros. was banking on Johnny Depp to put people in the theater. Supposedly, demand for THE AVENGERS was so great that DARK SHADOWS actually had to give up some screens to accommodate. That had to have been very humbling for WB and I’m sure they won’t forget it when THE DARK KNIGHT RISES makes a run at all of the records THE AVENGERS is setting.
Next weekend will be a crowded one as we see the release of BATTLESHIP, WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU’RE EXPECTING and THE DICTATOR. I don’t see any of those three doing a $50 million opening, so we could be in for three weekends in a row for THE AVENGERS. Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.
1. The Avengers $100m
2. Dark Shadows $28m
3. Think Like A Man $6.5m
4. The Hunger Games $4.3m
5. The Lucky One $4.1m
6. The Five Year Engagement $3.2m
7. Pirates! Band of Misfits $3.2m
8. Best Exotic Marigold Hotel $2.8m
9. Girl in Progress $1.5m
10. The Raven $1.2m
