Brad Pitt explains Killing Them Softly to Richard Jenkins in a new clip from the film

Brad Pitt in Killing Them Softly

When it was announced that the Brad Pitt starring COGAN’S TRADE was going to be renamed KILLING THEM SOFTLY, many of us were left scratching our head as to why a seemingly good title would be changed to a title that makes us think of a classic Roberta Flack song.  So it was smart move on the part of the filmmakers to release a clip from the film, featuring a greased up Brad Pitt explaining “killing them softly” to Richard Jenkins.  The film is generating a lot of buzz at Cannes right now, impressing just about everyone that was lucky enough to see it and even sparking a little bit of controversy for its political undertones.  Although it hasn’t won any awards (yet), I hope the film doesn’t suffer the same fate that DRIVE suffered last year, which is gaining a lot of steam at Cannes and then sputtering out when it’s finally released.  DRIVE deserved better than that and I’m guessing KILLING THEM SOFTLY does as well.  If the movie is half as good as the early reviews say it is, then we’re going to be in for a treat when it finally hits theaters in September (which, coincidentally, is when DRIVE hit theaters last year).

KILLING THEM SOFTLY is about a group of low-level, ignorant thugs that steal from a mob poker game and end up setting a chain of events in motion that rattles the entire crime world.  Hopefully, audiences will be okay with seeing Brad Pitt as a greasy  mob enforcer and not his usual, charming self.  KILLING THEM SOFTLY is based on the book ‘Cogan’s Trade’ by George V. Higgins.  The film stars Brad Pitt, Ray Liotta, James Gandolfini, Richard Jenkins, Ben Mendelsohn, Scoot McNairy, Max Casella, Sam Shepard and Bella Heathcote.  The Andrew Dominik directed film will hit theaters on September 21st.
