Although I always appreciated his previous efforts, it wasn’t until after walking out of the theater of last year’s THE TREE OF LIFE that I decided that I would forever see any Terrence Malick film ever made. So I’ve been following his handful of projects pretty closely and it’s taken a while, but now I realize why his fans and just about everyone in Hollywood gets so frustrated with him; it takes forever for his films to see the light of day. We’re still waiting on TO THE WONDER with Ben Affleck and Rachel McAdams, which may or may not be making the festival circuit in the coming months. Then we have the documentary VOYAGE OF TIME and the rock inspired film that used to be called LAWLESS with Christian Bale, Rooney Mara and Ryan Gosling.
Finally, we have KNIGHT OF CUPS, which we know virtually nothing about other than it stars Christian Bale, Natalie Portman, Wes Bentley, Cate Blanchett and Isabel Lucas. Of course, even if we did have a long and detailed synopsis, it wouldn’t matter because the film will probably change a hundred times before it ever sees the light of day. Malick answers to no one and he does things on his own time and on his own schedule. And frankly, after THE TREE OF LIFE, I’d say he’s earned that right. I’d rather he spend too much time working on four movies than go another 20 years without making any.
As you can see from the pics below, there’s probably a romantic connection between Portman and Bale’s character, but I’m guessing these shots are part of a montage than a meaningful scene. But again, you never know how they’re going to end up in the final film. As with all Malick films, we have no idea when this will actually hit theaters. (DailyMail)
