Kristen Stewart, Chris Hemsworth and director Rupert Sanders could all return for the Snow White sequel
Many of us were surprised that SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN managed to open to $56 million and I’m sure the executives at Universal were among the most surprised. Which might be why they’re so eager to move forward with a sequel to a film that doesn’t really call for it. After suffering an embarrassing loss with BATTLESHIP, I’m sure the studio is eager to move forward and is hoping Snow White will turn into their own franchise. As much as I’d like to trash them for making a sequel, I actually think a sequel could work out okay for them.
Rumor had it that before the film even came out, the studio was looking at a possible sequel that would focus more on the Huntsman (Chris Hemsworth). After the movie came out, most critics (read our SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN movie review) praised Chris Hemsworth and were dismissive of Kristen Stewart and Charlize Theron. Not that they did a bad job by any means, but if I were building a franchise, I’d want Chris Hemsworth at the center of it. The other factor that might help the sequel is that they’re not rushing the film to try and compete with MIRROR MIRROR. So they can take their time and make the film they want to make. Finally, news that Universal hired screenwriter David Koepp to pen the sequel is another good sign since he did well with other franchises, such as MISSION IMPOSSIBLE, JURASSIC PARK and SPIDER-MAN.
As for the main stars returning, virtually all the actors in the film have options for two sequels, so it’s a safe bet all of them will return, including Kristen Stewart, Charlize Theron and Chris Hemsworth, along with Sam Claflin, Ian McShane, Bob Hoskins, Eddie Izzard, Nick Frost, Ray Winstone and Toby Jones. Director Rupert Sanders is a more complicated situation since he doesn’t have an option for a sequel, but Universal supposedly wants him back and he hasn’t chosen his next film yet. (Deadline)
