Weekend box office: Ice Age 4 beats out The Amazing Spider-Man

Continuing with the proven theory that all summer animated sequels do well, ICE AGE 4: CONTINENTAL DRIFT took the top spot at the weekend box office, beating out last week’s winner, THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN. I’m not sure what it is with the Ice Age films, but kids seem to love them. Personally, I think of all the Dreamworks, Fox Animation and Pixar series out there, Ice Age is by far the worst. Although CARS is a very close second. But with four films under its belt and all of them successes, the Ice Age series doesn’t have an end in sight.
On another, but similar note, Sony’s Spider-Man reboot, THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN continued to do moderately well, losing about 51% of its audience from last week. It’s a little frustrating since the weekend box office numbers make it look pretty good, which will prevent any Hollywood exec from realizing what went wrong. Face it; you can put anyone in a Spider-Man costume and call the movie “Spider-Man” and fans will go see it. It doesn’t mean you have to retell the story over and over. Let’s hope the sequels introduce new characters and new story-lines for Peter Parker and Spider-Man.
There’s a tiny little indie movie coming out next week called THE DARK KNIGHT RISES. I doubt you’ve heard of it, but it’s a character piece about a this wealthy guy with a superhero complex that really likes flying rodents. I doubt it will do very well, so ICE AGE 4 might be able to make it two weekends at #1 in a row. Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.
