Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone and Josh Brolin go retro on a new banner for Gangster Squad

Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone on a new Gangster Squad banner

I’m still a little confused with what Warner Bros. has on their hands with GANGSTER SQUAD.  The story of a group of LA policemen that team up to take down a notorious criminal has all the makings of a hit film, but I can’t shake the feeling that the folks at WB don’t feel that way.  With current Hollywood up and comers Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, I would have expected a bigger push than what we’ve seen so far.  The movie hasn’t received much attention in terms of marketing material and the trailers for the film seem to be all over the place in terms of tone.  I’m also concerned about the September 7th release date, which is stuck in no-man’s land.  It’s too late to be a summer movie and too early to be a serious awards contender (although to be fair, there have been movies released in late September or early October that have won the Academy Award; AMERICAN BEAUTY comes to mind).  Either way, consider me one of the millions that is now a faithful fan of Ryan Gosling, so I’ll be there opening day no matter what.

GANGSTER SQUAD stars Ryan Gosling, Sean Penn, Josh Brolin , Robert Patrick, Anthony Mackie, Michael Pena, Sean Penn, Emma Stone, Nick Nolte, Giovanni Ribisi, Holt McCallany, Frank Grillo, Mirielle Enos and Troy Garity.  That’s an amazing cast, so here’s hoping director Reuben Fleischer knocks it out of the park and fully utilizes the talent at his disposal.  GANGSTER SQUAD  hits theaters on September 7, 2012.  For a much larger, wallpaper-ready size version, click here.
