Chris Hemsworth might be starring in Steven Spielberg's Robopocalypse

Chris Hemsworth

It must be nice to be Chris Hemsworth right now.  After carrying a low budget horror film in CABIN IN THE WOODS and then holding his own amongst an A-list cast in THE AVENGERS and pretty much single handedly making SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN watchable, Chris Hemsworth is on top of the Hollywood world right now.  And that was just what he’s done the past couple of months.  Chris Hemsworth already has RUSH with Ron Howard on the way, along with sequels to Snow White, THOR and of course, THE AVENGERS.  So the guy has it all.  If that wasn’t enough, supposedly Chris Hemsworth met with Steven Spielberg about starring in Spielberg’s long in development ROBOPOCALYPSE.  There’s no official offer on the table for Chris Hemsworth yet, but Spielberg usually gets what he wants.  The film is based on the novel by Daniel H. Wilson and revolves around the human race’s survival against a robot uprising.  The script was most recently worked on by Drew Goddard, who also worked on ‘Lost’ and wrote the great CLOVERFIELD.

It feels weird to even write this, but the thing I don’t like about the project is Steven Spielberg.  He has a long way to go to convince me he can still make a good summer popcorn film.  I’m not sure ROBOPOCALYPSE is the answer, since it sounds at a very high level like TRANSFORMERS.  I know it’s not and it’s actually much more sophisticated, but we’ve seen enough robots trying to take over the world.  Adding Chris Hemsworth is a good call on Spielberg’s part, so maybe the project will work out.  ROBOPOCALYPSE is already scheduled to hit theaters on April 25th, 2014.  As long as Chris Hemsworth isn’t playing THOR for Marvel, it should be a good opportunity for him to work with another great director, even if he isn’t quite in his prime.
