Peter Jackson officially decides to break The Hobbit into three films

With rumors swirling last week that Peter Jackson was going to break THE HOBBIT into three parts instead of just two, it’s not surprising to find out today that he will go ahead and suck more cash out of you enchant audiences with three films about the adventures of Bilbo Baggins.
Peter Jackson said in a statement earlier today: “It is only at the end of a shoot that you finally get the chance to sit down and have a look at the film you have made. Recently Fran, Phil and I did just this when we watched for the first time an early cut of the first movie – and a large chunk of the second. We were really pleased with the way the story was coming together, in particular, the strength of the characters and the cast who have brought them to life. All of which gave rise to a simple question: do we take this chance to tell more of the tale? And the answer from our perspective as the filmmakers, and as fans, was an unreserved ‘yes’.”
Although I applaud the fact that Peter Jackson has been given the support by New Line Cinema, Warner Bros., Metro-Goldwyn Mayer, Wingnut Films and, of course, all his cast and crew to make another feature length film about THE HOBBIT, I have to admit that adding another two and a half hours onto a story doesn’t do much to entice this writer. I’m not the biggest Tolkien fan to begin with so that could be the source of my reservations, but I’m sure fans out there will welcome more tales from Middle Earth. This just might be one of those trilogies that I catch on Blu-ray instead of sitting through in theaters.
Directed by Peter Jackson, the Hobbit films star Martin Freeman, Andy Serkis, Hugo Weaving, Stephen Fry, Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen, Brett McKenzie, Orlando Bloom, Evangeline Lilly, Ian Holm,Benedict Cumberbatch, Luke Evans and Cate Blanchett. THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY and part 2, THE HOBBIT: THERE AND BACK AGAIN, open on December 14th, 2012 and December 13th, 2013 respectively. No word on what the third film will be called, but I’m sure we’ll see it in December 2014. (Facebook)
