Leonardo DiCaprio and Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby gets pushed to Summer 2013

Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan and Joel Edgerton in The Great Gatsby

Boo hiss!! It was just recently announced that Baz Luhrmann’s upcoming period drama THE GREAT GATSBY was being pushed from Christmas 2012 to Summer 2013. I guess this means I’ll just have to root for Leonardo DiCaprio to win that Best Actor Oscar next year, though the film won’t be as fresh in the Academy’s minds (although he could still get a Best Supporting Actor award for DJANGO UNCHAINED- fingers crossed).  What a bummer.

So why was it pushed back? Well according to Warner Bros. president of domestic distribution, Dan Fellman, ” We think moviegoers of all ages are going to embrace it, and it makes sense to ensure this unique film reaches the largest audience possible.” So a summer release it will be for THE GREAT GATSBY. I suppose since THE GREAT GATSBY was going to be released at the same time as DJANGO UNCHAINED and around the same time as THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY, it will have a better shot at making more money next summer. However, that doesn’t mean we can’t all be bummed out that we won’t get to see a Baz Luhrmann extravaganza with Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan and Tobey Maguire. I’ll keep my fingers crossed that this new release date will give the director more time to tweak the film, though he does such great work it probably won’t require too much changing. (Deadline)
