Tony Scott: 1944 – 2012

Tony Scott

It’s with a heavy heart that I report that director Tony Scott passed away today of an apparent suicide at the age of 68.  Reports from the Los Angeles Port Police say that Tony Scott pulled over on the Vincent Thomas Bridge in San Pedro, scaled a ten foot fence and immediately jumped off without hesitating.  A suicide note was found inside his office, but the details of the note have not been released.  Tony Scott is survived by his twin sons and wife Donna Wilson.

On a personal note, this news hit me pretty hard.  Like most film critics, I never gave Tony Scott’s films much credit for being great works of art.  But as a film fan, I lavished praise on Tony Scott for making some of my top “go-to” movies, including TOP GUN, BEVERLY HILLS COP II, MAN ON FIRE and the very underrated SPY GAME.  I’ve always enjoyed his fast paced, stylized filmmaking and his loss will be felt in the industry.  His next film, OUT OF THE FURNACE with Christian Bale, just recently finished filming and will hit theaters sometime next year.
