Michel Hazanavicius might direct Tom Hanks and Natalie Portman in the film In The Garden of Beasts

Michel Hazanavicius

Last November, we reported that Tom Hanks picked up the rights to Erik Larsen’s non-fiction book ‘In the Garden of Beasts: Love, Terror and an American Family in Hitler’s Berlin’, about an American ambassador named William Dodd living in Berlin before WWII.  Personally, I was excited about the project, thinking it might be the vehicle Tom Hanks needs to get back to his Oscar winning days.  But it has been almost a year and we haven’t heard much about it, until now.  THE ARTIST director Michel Hazanavicius is in early talks to direct the drama, which is nothing short of Awards fodder and could bring little gold statues to everyone involved.

Speaking of little gold statues, Oscar winner Natalie Portman is also circling the project, looking to star as Dodd’s daughter in the film, Martha.  Martha was an interesting character in her own right, known mostly for having affairs for several members of the Nazi party.  Obviously, that probably doesn’t sit very well with Dodd’s growing mistrust of the Nazis.  So if everything comes together, IN THE GARDEN OF BEASTS could star two Oscar winning actors and be directed by an Oscar winning director.  Is it too early to predict the 2014 Academy Awards?  (Deadline)
