Weekend box office: Trouble With The Curve and End of Watch battle for the top spot

We have several new movies battling it out for the top spot at the weekend box office. In fact, we probably won’t know who will come out on top until the final numbers are tallied up on Monday morning. Every studio seems to be insisting their film is tops, but barely $300k separates the top two. On Friday, it looked like Jennifer Lawrence’s HOUSE AT THE END OF THE STREET was going to be number one, but it fell off on Saturday and now it looks like the Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Pena cop drama END OF WATCH will narrowly beat out Clint Eastwood’s baseball drama TROUBLE WITH THE CURVE (click the link to read our review). The disappointment of the weekend has to be with DREDD 3D. While it’s true I didn’t expect it to do very well, I was kind of rooting for it. I think it will find a nice home on Blu-ray and will be one of those films people watch and find surprisingly fun.
For those of you looking out for Oscar-worthy films, Paul Thomas Anderson’s THE MASTER is one to keep an eye out for. It’s doing very well for what it is and if I was a betting man, I’d say the Academy is going to take note of that come Oscar time. Next week sees the release of the Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Bruce Willis time traveling adventure LOOPER as well as the animated Adam Sandler film HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA. My heart is telling me LOOPER will win, but my brain is telling me to never bet against Adam Sandler. Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.
UPDATE: And just like that, HOUSE AT THE END OF THE STREET moved ahead, meaning three movies now have less than $300k separating them.
