Weekend box office: Cloud Atlas and Silent Hill: Revelation 3D battle with Argo

Weekend Box Office: Tom Hanks and Halle Berry in Cloud Atlas

I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a movie in its third week reclaim the top spot at the weekend box office, and definitely not a sophisticated drama, but that’s exactly what Ben Affleck’s ARGO is on pace to accomplish.  The film has managed to retain its audience since it’s initial release and that should go a long way when it comes down to awards season.  Just like everyone predicted, Hurricane Sandy has wreaked havoc on the box office, bringing the overall total to a decline after a few strong weeks of increasing tallies.  That made it difficult for the new films of the weekend to gain any traction, but CLOUD ATLAS is on track to finish the strongest.  It seems to be a very polarizing film, with some critics loving it and some critics despising it.  SILENT HILL: REVELATION 3D was destroyed by critics, but still managed to bring in close to $10 million.  The other new movies of the weekend, FUN SIZE and CHASING MAVERICKS both struggled, not being able to hit the $5 million mark.  Neither film received very good reviews, but I expected CHASING MAVERICKS to do a little better considering how many TV spots I’ve seen for it.

Next week sees the release of a handful of good-looking movies, including the animated WRECK-IT RALPH, Denzel Washington in FLIGHT and the fun looking THE MAN WITH THE IRON FISTS.  If there’s one thing I’ve learned since I’ve been following the weekend box office results, it’s that you should never bet against a kids movie.  So with that in mind, I’m betting WRECK-IT RALPH will finish strong next week.  Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.

1. Argo $12.3m

2. Hotel Transylvania $9.5m

3. Cloud Atlas $9.4m

4. Paranormal Activity 4 $8.6m

5. Silent Hill Revelation 3D $8m

6. Taken 2 $8m

7. Here Comes the Boom $5.5m

8. Sinister $5m

9. Alex Cross $5m

10. Pitch Perfect $4m
