Weekend box office: Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 2 and Skyfall make this the biggest Thanksgiving weekend ever
Although this Thanksgiving saw many newcomers to the weekend box office, it was three holdovers that stole the show, making the biggest Thanksgiving weekend in history. THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN PART 2 continued it’s money-making haul, pushing its total to well over $225 million since its release. Maybe more impressive than that is the success that SKYFALL has found, taking in over $200 million as well. LINCOLN helped its Oscar hopes, coming in third place this weekend, thanks in large part to the good word of mouth Daniel Day-Lewis’s performance has garnered. The new movies of the weekend didn’t do as well with RISE OF THE GUARDIANS and RED DAWN underperforming. Oscar hopefulls LIFE OF PI and SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK (click the links to read our reviews) did well considering they have limited appeal, but if The Weinstein Company is betting on Playbook, they need more success than what they’ve found. I also find their limited rollout of the film to be confusing since a lot of people that want to see it can’t find it at their local multiplex.
Next week sees the release of Brad Pitt’s KILLING THEM SOFTLY. Although I think KILLING THEM SOFTLY is going to be a good film, I don’t think it’s the kind of film that will do well at the weekend box office. My guess is that THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN PART 2 will make it three weekends in a row. In fact, I don’t see any real competition for Twilight until THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY hits theaters on December 14th. Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final. Also, these numbers are for the 5 day Thanksgiving weekend.
1. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 $66m
2. Skyfall $51.1m
3. Lincoln $34m
4. Rise of the Guardians $32m
5. Life of Pi $30m
6. Wreck-It Ralph $23m
7. Red Dawn $22.5m
8. Flight $10.9m
9. Silver Linings Playbook $5.5m
10. Argo $4.8m
