The ten worst movies of 2012

5. JOHN CARTER This is a film we really wanted to like, but it just didn’t work.  There are fans out there that are clamoring for a sequel, but even die-hard Carter fans have to admit that the film version of the classic novel was a failure all around.  Taylor Kitsch wasn’t ready for that big of a movie and director Andrew Stanton took several wrong turns, resulting in a forgettable (and expensive) blockbuster.

4. ONE FOR THE MONEY – KNOCKED UP seems like a long time ago for Katherine Heigl.  Although she’s done a few successful romantic comedies since then, ONE FOR THE MONEY was her chance to show she can carry her own film and maybe even start her own franchise.  Unfortunately, she couldn’t have picked a worse way to silence her critics since the film was a disaster from start to finish.

3. THE DEEP BLUE SEA – This film would have been passed over and forgotten if not for Rachel Weisz winning a couple of Best Actress awards from various critics societies.  To be honest, that’s what prompted us to go pick it up and it’s hard to describe how painfully awful this movie is.  The film quality is poor, the directing is amateurish and although the performances were fine, both Tom Hiddleston and Rachel Weisz have done much, much better.

2. GHOST RIDER: SPIRIT OF VENGEANCE – We don’t mind Nicolas Cage, but Cage as Ghost Rider just isn’t working.  It’s frustrating because the Ghost Rider character is pretty great in the comics, but both movies have been nearly unwatchable.  Ghost Rider deserves more, so hopefully Sony and Marvel can find a way to make it work.

1. MIRROR, MIRROR –  The great Snow White battle of 2012 turned out to be a Snow White beat down by the Huntsman.  We love fun, silly movies that don’t take themselves too seriously, but MIRROR MIRROR was plain awful.  The film is completely void of humor and originality and featured poor performances from everyone involved.

Movie that Brad loved but Nathan hated – CLOUD ATLAS – With a massive production value and an all-star cast from the visionary directors who brought us THE MATRIX, CLOUD ATLAS never goes beyond only being ambitious.  The biggest disappointment is just how lackluster the whole picture truly is, trying to pose as something more important.  Every story is bland and nearly each character is cartoonish. The deeper philosophical meanings come off amateurish, void of any intelligent substance or emotional relevance.

Movie that Nathan loved but Brad hated – THE ODD LIFE OF TIMOTHY GREEN – I get frustrated at films that think they’re more sentimental and heartfelt than they are and Green is a good example of that.  Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Garner had zero chemistry and the script was all over the place, never once developing any single storyline.  The filmmakers wanted the audience to care, but spent very little time giving us anything to care about.
