Weekend box office: Zero Dark Thirty and Gangster Squad do well

America has been waiting to see what all the fuss and controversy is about with ZERO DARK THIRTY (click the link to read our review) and now they finally got to see it for themselves. Kathryn Bigelow’s film did pretty well, taking in around $25 million in it’s first go at the weekend box office. That was good enough for first place, beating out the delayed GANGSTER SQUAD. I’m not sure GANGSTER SQUAD would have done better had it been released in September, but with stars Emma Stone, Ryan Gosling and Josh Brolin, I did expect the movie to at least crack the $20 million mark. But critics didn’t like it either, so I guess we shouldn’t be too surprised. Speaking of not being surprised, Marlon Wayans’ new travesty, A HAUNTED HOUSE will probably finish around $17 million, which is good enough for third place. Last week’s number one film, TEXAS CHAINSAW 3D dropped like a rock, all the way down to 9th place. Holdovers DJANGO UNCHAINED and LES MISERABLES are still doing pretty well, riding high off their Oscar nominations and rounding out the top five.
Next week sees the release of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s grand return to action movies in THE LAST STAND, which actually looks kind of fun. I miss seeing Aunuld on the big screen. We also get another Jessica Chastain film in the low budget horror movie MAMA and the Mark Wahlberg, Russell Crowe starring BROKEN CITY. It’s going to be a crowded weekend, but something tells me America will welcome Schwarzenegger back with open arms. Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.
UPDATE: It looks like A HAUNTED HOUSE will pass GANGSTER SQUAD for the second spot. That has to be embarrassing for GANGSTER SQUAD.
