Ten directors that should take on Star Wars, but probably won’t

The only news that we have so far in terms of the new Star Wars movies is who won’t be directing them. That prompted me to compile a list of directors that have either ruled themselves out or that I don’t think have any chance of taking on the series. I also added a note to each director as to whether or not they’ve confirmed they won’t be directing Star Wars or not. I’d also like to point out that with something this big and ever evolving, nothing is official until you hear it straight from Kathleen Kennedy’s mouth.
10. Steven Spielberg – Spielberg has lost his touch. I compare the genuine, touching and great E.T. to the nice but empty WAR HORSE as the best example of how he’s changed over the last 20 years. That said, he’s still better than 90% of the directors working today. But getting Spielberg on this series is kind of like the Wizards getting Michael Jordan. Yeah, it’s nice, but it’s just not the same. Confirmed
9. Michael Bay – Okay, I’m chuckling out loud as I write this, but here me out. Say what you want about Bay, but he can direct an action scene with style, which is something Star Wars needs. If Michael Arndt’s script is as incredible as I hope it is and if producer Kathleen Kennedy kept Bay in check, it could actually work. Not confirmed.
8. Sam Mendes – Why not? He’s at the top of his game, has already won an Oscar and handled a big budget, action franchise with last year’s SKYFALL. Imagine a Star Wars movie directed by Mendes and shot by Roger Deakins. Okay, let’s come back down to reality; Mendes is a great choice, but I can’t imagine him committing to the franchise long term. Plus, he’s already hinted that he wants to return to Bond. Not confirmed
7. Brad Bird – I like and respect Brad Bird, especially after MI4, but I can’t say he’s my first choice to handle Star Wars. He worked hard to break out of the Pixar pigeon hold, so I doubt he’d jump back into something that would require even more of his time and trap him into doing the same thing for the next ten years (or longer). Confirmed
6. Christopher Nolan – A boy can dream can’t he? After dedicating a significant part of his directing life to Batman, it’s unreasonable to think he’d dedicate another chunk to Star Wars. I think one of his issues with Batman is that it was too time consuming over too long of a period of time, so there’s no way he’d tackle something as huge as Star Wars. Plus, if he pumps out more films like INCEPTION, then I’d prefer he not do Star Wars. Not confirmed
