Ten directors that should take on Star Wars, but probably won’t

5. David Fincher – Fincher is a fan favorite and one of the best directors working today, but if we step back and think about it, Star Wars really isn’t his cup of tea. I know he has close ties to Lucasfilm, but he wouldn’t even commit long term to the Dragon Tattoo trilogy and asking him to jump into the beginning of the Star Wars reboot seems unlikely. I’ve also heard rumblings that he could direct the second or third, but I don’t see that as likely. He’s the guy that gives orders these days, why would he want to work under someone else’s umbrella? Not confirmed

JJ Abrams on the set of Star Trek

4. J.J. Abrams – The reason Abrams won’t direct Star Wars is the same reason I think he should; STAR TREK. What he did with that series can’t be understated as he took a dead franchise and breathed new, exciting life into it, attracting a whole new generation of fans. It would be great if he could do the same thing for Star Wars, but it’s unreasonable to think he could handle the two of the biggest franchises at the same time. Confirmed

Joss Whedon and Chris Hemsworth

3. Joss Whedon – I’ve been a Whedonite for a while now and before THE AVENGERS, he would have been the perfect choice. But Marvel has basically crowned him king and he has no reason to give up one throne for another. Not confirmed.

2. Guillermo Del Toro – He’s original, talented, experienced and has great vision for a director. But I think his work on The Hobbit turned him off of franchises and he has his hands in so many projects that he’d have to sacrifice a lot to take on something like Star Wars. He’s been very open about his non involvement in Star Wars, but there’s still a part of me hoping it’s just misdirection. Confirmed

Matthew Vaughn and James McAvoy on the set of X-Men First Class

1. Matthew Vaughn – Vaughn is my top choice to direct Star Wars. What he did with X-Men was incredible, especially given what little time he had to work on it. The dynamics he handled between the X-Men is similar in ways to the characters in Star Wars and his writing experience would come in handy. He hasn’t said one way or the other, but early word is that he’s focused on another comic book movie. Not confirmed.
