Weekend box office: A Good Day To Die Hard and Safe Haven do well

Predictably, A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD did well at the weekend box office, but not spectacular. But with around $30 million over the four day holiday weekend, I got to thinking; how does it stack up to the previous four Die Hard movies. Well, the first four opening weekend grosses, in order, are: $7m, $21m, $22m, $33m and now about $30m. Of course, there are a lot of things to consider, such as number of screens (the first Die Hard film opened on 1,700 screens and this one opened on 3,500) and inflation. But what I deduce from the numbers is that all of the Die Hard films seem to achieve about the same success. What that also means is that you can plan for a DIE HARD 6, because if the series isn’t dead already, Hollywood will make sure with one sequel too many. The other big release of the weekend was the Nicolas Sparks adaptation SAFE HAVEN, which actually made sense to open over Valentine’s Day, which will finish somewhere between $25 and $30 million. Unfortunately, ESCAPE FROM PLANET EARTH and BEAUTIFUL CREATURES didn’t fare so well with both of them struggling to hit the $10 million mark.
Next week sees The Rock take on drug dealers in SNITCH along with the horror film, DARK SKIES. I’m still not sold on how well Dwayne Johnson can carry his own film, so I would bet on John McClane and A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD repeating in the top spot. But DARK SKIES shouldn’t be counted out; I always seem to underestimate horror movies. Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final and are for the 4 day weekend.
