Weekend box office: Jack The Giant Slayer and 21 and Over struggle
It should come as no surprise that the big budget fairy tale film, JACK THE GIANT SLAYER, didn’t fare so well at the weekend box office. It seemed to be forgotten by everyone involved, including director Bryan Singer, who spent most of the weeks leading up to the film’s release talking about his X-Men sequel than about the film that was opening up this weekend. We should give Warner Bros. some credit, though because they did pour a lot of money into marketing the film, even if their efforts didn’t pay off like they hoped. Of course, the other new movies of the weekend didn’t do much better. 21 AND OVER may have finally killed the “party-out-of-control” comedy schtick that has been played out. And I’m still scratching my head as to how THE LAST EXORCISM received a sequel, but PART II did about as well as you would have thought, which is to say it didn’t do very well at all.
Next week sees the release of OZ THE GREAT AND THE POWERFUL. I will be happy when this hits theaters because I have to constantly correct my non-movie friends that it’s not a remake of THE WIZARD OF OZ, but it’s actually a prequel. I know, it’s obvious to most, but there are still people out there that think it’s a remake. We also get the Colin Farrell, Noomi Rapace drama DEAD MAN DOWN, which didn’t look good to me at first, but has worn on me over time and now I’m looking forward to it. Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.
1. Jack The Giant Slayer $26m
2. Identity Thief $9.7m
3. 21 And Over $9.1m
4. The Last Exorcism Part II $7.9m
