Weekend box office: G.I. Joe Retaliation beats out The Croods and The Host

G.I. JOE: RISE OF COBRA opened to $54 million when it debuted back in August, 2009, so in most regards, the $40 million that its sequel, G.I. JOE: RETALIATION is bringing in at the weekend box office is a little bit of a disappointment. The first film went on to make over $150 million and it did so with horrible word of mouth. The sequel, by all accounts, is much better and seems to be what the fans wanted in the first place. That should equate to a longer box office life and of course, more sequels. Twilight author Stephenie Meyer saw the adaptation of her non-Twilight book, THE HOST debut as well, although it didn’t fare quite as well. The film is barely holding onto the fifth spot and it doesn’t seem to be getting very good reviews. Tyler Perry surprised the world again with TYLER PERRY’S TEMPTATION hauling in a whopping $20 million. I still can’t sit through an entire Tyler Perry movie with or without Madea, but he has his fans and his fans make him a very rich man.
Next Week sees the debut of EVIL DEAD, which looks like the first actually scary movie of the year and therefore, should do very well. It also sees the release of Danny Boyle’s TRANCE with James McAvoy, which looks great but probably won’t do very well at the weekend box office. Finally, we get Robert Redford’s Shia LaBeouf starring THE COMPANY YOU KEEP, which looks interesting, but again, probably won’t do very well. My guess is that G.I. JOE: RETALIATION and EVIL DEAD will battle for the top spot. Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.
