Weekend box office: 42 overperforms while Scary Movie 5 bombs
Although 42 has definitely overperformed at the weekend box office, the bigger news is how poorly SCARY MOVIE 5 has one. True, the franchise was dead a long time ago, but how soon we forge that SCARY MOVIE 4 raked in over $40 million (5 is barely pushing $15 million) on its opening weekend and many thought the franchise was dead when that one hit theaters. Maybe it’s because Anna Faris decided to finally leave the franchise (she had appeared in the previous 4), or maybe it’s because America is sick of Charlie Sheen and Lindsay Lohan. Or, maybe it’s because Dimension films is out of ideas and is just a pale reflection of what it was back in the late 90’s. Either way, this will hopefully signal an end to the Scary Movie franchise. On the positive side, the Jackie Robinson baseball biopic 42 did very well, no doubt capitalizing on baseball’s opening day and the upcoming Jackie Robinson tribute day that’s coming up. Over $25 million is a pretty good haul for a movie without any stars (sorry, Harrison Ford hasn’t been a star in a while and this isn’t his movie anyway).
Next week sees the release of Tom Cruise’s OBLIVION. Early reviews have been glowingly positive, so it’s possible the film will live up to the promise we’ve seen in the trailers. We also get the release of Rob Zombie’s THE LORDS OF SALEM, but given the lack of marketing, I don’t see that competing with OBLIVION for the top spot. The good news is that summer movie season is only a few short weeks away. Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.
1. 42 $26m
2. Scary Movie 5 $13.4m
