Weekend box office: Oblivion beats out 42 and The Croods
Even though OBLIVION (click the link to read our review) didn’t have any competition at the weekend box office, I was a little concerned how Tom Cruise’s return to science-fiction would fare with the general public. As it turns out, the general public likes Tom Cruise and science fiction to the tune of more than $37 million. Overseas though, OBLIVION is raking in all sorts of cash, proving that the world loves Tom Cruise. The film might have made even more money if it wasn’t for most of the East Coast being glued to their TV’s while keeping up on the Boston Marathon bombings. In some ways, watching the Boston PD chase down the two suspects was more fulfilling than anything you can find at the movies. The Jackie Robinson biopic, 42, continued strong, easily capitalizing on Major League Baseball’s Jackie Robinson day. Meanwhile, as the Bradley Cooper and Ryan Gosling drama, THE PLACE BEYOND THE PINES expands to more and more theaters, it’s starting to pick up, although just over $4 million isn’t anything to brag about with that kind of cast.
Next week is the calm before the summer blockbuster storm. We have the Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson action-comedy PAIN & GAIN, which looks like a fun movie. We also have the ensemble THE BIG WEDDING with Robert De Niro, Robin Williams, Katherine Heigl and Amanda Seyfried, along with Reese Witherspoon’s and Matthew McConaughey’s MUD. OBLIVION is getting good word of mouth, but I’m guessing Michael Bay’s PAIN & GAIN will take the top spot. Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.
1. Oblivion $37.5m
2. 42 $17.6m
3. The Croods $9.7m
4. Scary Movie 5 $5.9m
5. G.I. Joe: Retaliation $5.7m
6. The Place Beyond The Pines $4.5m
7. Olympus Has Fallen $4.3m
8. Evil Dead $3.9m
9. Jurassic Park 3D $3.8m
10. Oz The Great and Powerful $3.2m
