Liam Neeson replaces Bradley Cooper in The Grey for director Joe Carnahan

Friday, September 3rd, 2010

Posted by: Brad Sturdivant

I suppose when you’re set to star with Ryan Reynolds in a cop comedy, you don’t need to do a small drama about a team of plane crash survivors that battle some angry wolves.  Thankfully for Joe Carnahan, his other A-Team star is more than willing to step into the role as Liam Neeson looks set to replace Cooper in the film THE GREY.  The film will follow a team of oil drillers after they crash land in the middle of nowhere in Alaska.  They soon find themselves under attack from a pack of large, vicious wolves that see them as threats to their land.

I’m not sure how I feel about a movie making wolves out to be mean, vicious creatures and I’m a little nervous they’re going to go FURRY VENGEANCE on us and make this about animals protecting the environment.  But on the other hand, Carnahan’s best film was NARC, which was a gritty drama and from what it sounds like, this could let him get back to his roots.

Ryan Reynolds and Bradley Cooper teaming up for a comedy

Monday, August 30th, 2010

Posted by: Brad Sturdivant

Sheldon Turner must have written one heck of a script to get it-boys Ryan Reynolds and Bradley Cooper to star in the same film together.  Turner wrote UP IN THE AIR, but before you go lovin’ on the guy, keep in mind he also wrote THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE: THE BEGINNING and THE LONGEST YARD.  So he’s not exactly batting a thousand with his scripts.  But this current script, which doesn’t have a name yet, ” follows two friends, who are also San Francisco cops, whose fathers were once partners on the police force. The older generation is forced out of retirement to help their sons crack a case, with typically antagonistic results.”

It sounds funny and with Reynolds and Cooper in two of the lead roles, it’ll be interesting to see who they get to play their fathers.  How about Robert De Niro and Al Pacino?  Yeah, it’s obvious, but it could be fun.

Jonathan Demme circling Honeymoon With Harry starring Robert De Niro and Bradley Cooper

Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010

Posted by: Brad Sturdivant

If you follow projects that are either in work, or on the verge of being in work, you hear about scripts that get really close, but can’t seem to get all the right pieces together.  Paul Haggis’s script HONEYMOON WITH HARRY is one such project that has been gestating for over seven years now.  It seems things might be changing for the script as it now has a studio, two actors and a director all swarming the script like buzzards.  If everything goes through, Jonathan Demme will direct Robert De Niro and Bradley Cooper in the depressing drama.  It should be reiterated that at this point, all three have met with the studio, but none have signed onto the deal.

The film is about a womanizing playboy (Cooper) that meets the girl of his dreams and decides to settle down and marry her, against her father’s (De Niro) wishes.  But right before their wedding, she suffers a tragic death.  Grief-stricken, the guy goes on their planned honeymoon by himself with the goal of drinking himself to death.  But he also meets up with her father, who is there to spread her ashes on her favorite beach.  Just reading that makes me tear up.  And with the overly sappy Haggis behind the script, you can be sure they’ll milk all the emotion out of the audience they can.

M. Night Shyamalan shopping new film with Bruce Willis, Bradley Cooper and Gwyneth Paltrow

Monday, June 21st, 2010

Posted by: Brad Sturdivant

Not many directors are in need of a box office hit more than M. Night Shyamalan and I’m guessing he and Paramount are betting that his upcoming THE LAST AIRBENDER will be a return to form for the director.  But while Airbender is getting the finishing touches, Shyamalan is already shopping his next script.  Given the fact a brand new Shyamalan script doesn’t carry as much weight as it used to, he went ahead and took the liberty of getting actors to agree to star in it before he found a studio to produce it.  In this case, Bradley Cooper, Gwyneth Paltrow and longtime friend Bruce Willis are all attached to star in the film.  So even if a studio doesn’t care that Shyamalan wrote it, maybe they’ll care that there’s serious talent attached to it.

I’m one of the few people that actually enjoyed most of Shyamalan’s films, but even I have to admit that this news would have been much more exciting 7 years ago.  His secrecy around his films continues (played to great laughs in Entourage) as he will only let top executives read his scripts.  Again, that was probably necessary 7 years ago, but I think most people have lost interest by now.

Disney to launch Bradley Cooper baseball flick

Friday, June 18th, 2010

Posted by: Nathan Swank

Disney will go to “bat” with another baseball film after being “pitched” a story by Allen Loeb. Well that was punny. Anyway the untitled film will star Bradley Cooper as an injured baseball player on the mend.

The comedy-drama has been described to have similar themes as Disney’s other baseball film THE ROOKIE staring Dennis Quaid and SCENT OF A WOMAN starring Al Pacino. That second film seems like a weird comparison. I have no idea what that means. Is one of the characters blind? Does he continually shout, “Hoo Waa?” They really need to throw us a ball here. Ehh? See what I did there? Sorry it’s late.

The Karate Kid finishes first while The A-Team comes in second at the box office

Sunday, June 13th, 2010

I knew THE KARATE KID would be successful because the story is proven and there aren’t many quality, non-animated kid movies these days, but I was definitely not expecting $56 million.  Somewhere, Ralph Macchio is kicking himself.  I am surprised at the disappointing numbers for THE A-TEAM, I thought it was a really fun ride and I think a lot of people are missing out on a really good summer blockbuster.  SHREK: FOREVER AFTER finally fell out of the top spot and dropped to number 3 with $15 million.  Other than that, the rest of the rankings were similar to last week.

So next week sees the release of a little movie called TOY STORY 3, which is all but guaranteed to be the number 1 movie.  It also sees the release of JONAH HEX, which I’m afraid is destined to be this year’s biggest box office flop.  I think it would have done much better with an early fall or late winter release because the buzz on that film is almost zero.

The A-Team

Thursday, June 10th, 2010

The original 80’s A-Team TV show is one of those shows from my childhood that I look back on fondly, but whenever I sit down to watch an episode these days, I get really bored, really quick.  But as boring as some of the plots were, the best part about the show was the great characters; Hannibal, Face, B.A. and Murdock who managed to make every show at least bearable.  Joe Carnahan seemed to know this while making his theatrical adaptation of the show because he pulled the best elements of the TV show and left the 80’s cheese right where it belongs; in the 80’s.  But rest assured that this is the fun, high-energy summer blockbuster we’ve been waiting for.

Liam Neeson and Bradley Cooper in The A-Team

This is an origins story of sorts as we open up with Hannibal and Face on a two-man mission in Mexico where Hannibal stumbles upon B.A. Barracus.  This whole scene with Hannibal and B.A. was awkward and unnecessary.  I hate to swipe a film so early on, but they would have been better picking up with the team as they found Murdock.  But once the team comes together, we flash forward 8 years where the team embarks on a heist mission in Iraq.  Of course, they were set up by a crooked CIA agent (Patrick Wilson) and after being sentenced for the crime they didn’t commit, they proceed to break out and clear their names.  Think of this A-TEAM movie as a modernized, two-hour TV episode with bigger action and a better script.

Jessica Biel and Bradley Cooper in The A-Team

The big question mark coming into the film was how each actor was going to be able to live up to their original counterpart.  Of the four, I thought Sharlto Copley did the best as Murdock.  He captured the essence well and I liked what he brought to the character.  But all of the four did a fine job, even Rampage Jackson.  However, the highlight of the film, performance wise, came from Patrick Wilson, who played a wonderfully sleazy and obnoxious villain.  He was funny and threatening, all in the same voice.  I really liked what they did with his character and having a decent bad guy added legitimacy to the film that I wasn’t expecting.

Rampage Jackson in The A-Team

In the previews, you may think the action scenes look a little cheesy.  Aside from the falling tank stunt (which was better in the film), I didn’t have a problem with any of the action sequences.  The special effects at the end, with the falling containers, felt a little fake, but it was a grand stunt that was over the top anyway.  The other scenes were fun and fit into the film nicely.  We even had a couple of “here’s-the-plan” montages that permeated throughout the TV show.

Liam Neeson and Bradley Cooper in The A-Team

When it comes to TV shows that get made into movies, the first question I ask myself is; would this have been a good film without the TV show name?  In other words, would I have liked this if it hadn’t been called THE A-TEAM and I didn’t already know any of the characters?  In this case, the answer is yes.  Carnahan kept this light, fun and engaging on all levels.  The cast did a great job, the script was fun and it had just the right amount of homage to the original show.  Oh, and be sure to stick around after the credits.

Anna Friel joins Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro in The Dark Fields

Monday, April 5th, 2010

Posted by: Brad Sturdivant

The latest, and probably last, casting news we have for the upcoming thriller THE DARK FIELDS is that the too-cute-for-words Anna Friel (from TV’s ‘Pushing Daisies’) has signed on for the film.  She joins a cast that includes Bradley Cooper, Robert De Niro, Abbie Cornish and Tomas Arana.  Neil Burger is directing the film based on the book by Alan Glynn.

The film is about a struggling man (Cooper) that stumbles upon a top secret pharmaceutical drug that makes you smarter.  But after taking it and reaping personal and financial success, he discovers the drug has serious side effects, one of which is “trip-switching”, where time moves with a stop-motion quality.  Eventually, certain people start to notice his situation and he finds himself on the run from them and from the drug’s side-effects.  Friel will play Cooper’s ex-wife.

Liam Neeson and Bradley Cooper featured in the new A-Team trailer and poster

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

Posted by: Brad Sturdivant

A-TEAM fever had kind of died down after that first picture was released and then the teaser trailer.  So Fox had to remedy that and release a brand new poster and full length trailer for the highly anticipated 80′s TV show adaptation.  The poster is kind of pedestrian to me and there was something off about the trailer.  I loved the beginning and the slow intro into the familiar theme, but the action scenes they featured didn’t do anything for me.  I just really don’t like the idea of shooting a tank gun while parachuting in the tank.  Something about that doesn’t make sense to me and it looks awkward in the trailer.

The film stars Liam Neeson as Hannibal, Bradley Cooper as Face, Sharlto Copely as Murdock and Rampage Jackson as B.A. Baracus. Jessica Biel and Patrick Wilson also star in the film directed by Joe Carnahan.  The A-TEAM hits theaters on June 11th.

Robert De Niro joins Bradley Cooper in The Dark Fields

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

Posted by: Brad Sturdivant

Bradley Cooper’s foray into real acting got a welcomed boost as Robert De Niro has signed on to star alongside Cooper in the upcoming drama THE DARK FIELDS.  We just heard unconfirmed reports that Elizabeth Banks could be playing the female lead in the thriller and so the cast is beginning to fill out.  The film is about a man that takes a drug to make himself smarter and receives financial and social success because of it, only to find out there are harsh side effects.  Leslie Dixon wrote the script based off the book by Alan Glynn.  Neil Burger will be handling directing duties.

Robert De Niro has had a string of bad films recently, but he’s still one of the best actors around.  I’m hoping Burger knows what to do with him.  The real question is whether or not Bradley Cooper can handle a role that doesn’t require him to woo a leading lady.

Elizabeth Banks looking at Dark Fields with Bradley Cooper

Monday, March 1st, 2010

Posted by: Brad Sturdivant

A while ago we learned that Bradley Cooper was going to be starring in Neil Burger’s DARK FIELDS.  The story is about a writer that stumbles upon a drug that makes you smarter and after taking it, he becomes financially and socially successful, only to learn that the drug has harsh side effects.  Today we have an unconfirmed report that Elizabeth Banks will be starring opposite Cooper in the thriller.  To date, this will seemingly be the first time Cooper has really challenged himself as an actor, so I’m looking forward to this.

Banks is one of those actresses that I tend to go back and forth on.  Sometimes I really like her and other times she’s very unappealing.  I do like that she chooses different roles and has managed to avoid being pigeon holed in a particular genre.

More Pictures From the new A-Team Movie Released

Friday, January 15th, 2010

Posted by: Brad Sturdivant

Today we have more new pictures from the upcoming A-TEAM film. Fox has been hitting the internet pretty hard with advertising for the film and it sees to be paying off. The buzz is pretty high for the film and everything we’ve seen so far makes it look pretty fun. I don’t know about that first picture, though, they almost look like the women from Sex and the City in that pose. Click here to watch the film’s trailer.

As you know, the film stars Liam Neeson as Hannibal, Bradley Cooper as Face, Sharlto Copely as Murdock and Rampage Jackson as B.A. Baracus. It’s being directed by Joe Carnahan and will hit theaters June 11th, 2010.

Jessica Biel, Bradley Cooper, Taylor Lautner and Taylor Swift in Valentine’s Day Trailer

Sunday, December 20th, 2009

Posted by: Brad Sturdivant

Garry Marshall has put one heck of a cast together for his next film VALENTINE’S DAY.  The cast is so big, and so well known that I can’t tell what the movie is about because 30 seconds of the trailer is spent listing everyone that’s in the film.  Apparently, it’s an interweaving tale of various people and couples on Valentine’s Day.  The cast includes, but is not limited to: Julia Roberts, Ashton Kutcher, Bradley Cooper, Taylor Lautner, Taylor Swift, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Biel, Emma Roberts, Jennifer Garner, Jamie Foxx, Patrick Dempsey, Eric Dane, Topher Grace, Jessica Alba and Queen Latifah.

Whew.  I didn’t even get to everyone, I just got tired of writing.  Watch the trailer here.

The Hangover

Tuesday, December 15th, 2009

Four guys head to Vegas for a bachelor party. We have the groom, Doug, played by Justin Bartha, his two best friends, Phil, played by Bradley Cooper and Stu, played by Ed Helms. Then we have Doug’s sloppy, slow, soon to be brother in-law Alan played by Zach Galifiankis. Then we cut to the morning after as the fellas begin to regain consciousness, half naked, missing a tooth, a belly button pierced, with a chicken, a tiger and a baby. Oh, and missing one groom. The remaining three with no memory of the evening spend the next two days driving in a police car (another mystery) searching for answers piecing together the night to hopefully find the groom before his wedding.

Hangover

I can’t express how great this concept is. I love the premise!!! Working in reverse, we as an audience keep finding out the answers along with the characters as to why something happened. As a ‘Lost’ fan, this was quite fulfilling; continually receiving answers rather than asking questions. A lot of credit is in order to the Director, Todd Phillips and the writers, Jon Lucas and Scott Moore. The pacing kept the story moving, never letting a joke linger too long. The look of the film was gorgeous contrasting the beauty of the night in Vegas to the “hangover” it can be during the day in the dessert. A joke or element was constantly being delivered then cleverly resolved or left behind before the joke got old or redundant. The film kept the audience wanting more, never tiring of what ever might be thrown in front of them next.

(L-r) Alan (ZACH GALIFIANAKIS), Stu (ED HELMS), Doug (JUSTIN BAR

The actors were perfectly cast. Bradley Cooper is on the verge of superstardom and was excellent as the jerk school teacher and good-looking leader of the group. What made him work even more is that he was not invincible to the hardships that the group received. He had his share of brutal punishment, which made him all the more enjoyable. Ed Helms as a dentist who is whipped by his overly angry and controlling girlfriend is absolutely superb. Zach Galifianakis did the impossible by stealing the show from a perfectly performed cast with his “to stupid to insult” personality. He has sincerity with his dumbness and an endearing quality of wanting to be accepted, specifically by Cooper’s character that he constantly emulates.

_MG_0889.dng

Be sure to stick around for the ending credits because here is what gives this film the hard R revealing photo shots of what actually happened throughout the night. This was such a satisfying and fulfilling comedy, which is a rarity in most films I come across today. Sure there is some unrealism in certain scenarios and some jokes might seem too silly or sophomoric at times but the people working in this film sell it well. I believe this movie will be a long-lasting “classic”, enduring the test of time with the current generation for if nothing else than it’s quote-ability factor. THE HANGOVER is laugh out loud, uproariously funny.

Renée Zellweger, Bradley Cooper and Ian McShane in Case 39 Trailer

The trailer for the horror flick CASE 39 is here and it looks like they’re falling back on the old adage that kids are creepy.  Not all kids mind you, but emotionless little girls with long, straight, black hair are definitely creepy.  In the film, Renee Zellweger stars as a social worker assigned to investigate the abuse of a little girl.  When she gets to her house, she finds that there’s a lot more going on than abuse and the situation quickly gets out of hand.  Bradley Cooper and Ian McShane also star in the film directed by Christian Alvart.

Bradley Cooper to Star in Suspense Thriller

Friday, November 6th, 2009

Posted by: Brad Sturdivant

The man of the moment right now has got to be Bradley Cooper.  Virtually every big movie that comes out has his name attached to it, but he’s finally settled on a somewhat complicated suspense thriller called DARK FIELDS. Neil Burger (THE ILLLUSIONIST) will direct the film for Relativity Media.

Variety describes the film as: “a what-if story about a designer drug that can make you rich and powerful. Eddie (Cooper) is a down-and-out New York writer until he possesses a pill that gives him the ability to access the full capacity of his brain. He soon realizes that his newfound intelligence and success come at a hefty price as mysterious forces begin to pursue him.”

That sounds like a complicated concept to me.  Films like that can usually go either way, so here’s hoping Cooper and Burger can pull it off.

He Said/She Said #06: He’s Just Not That Into You

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

by: Sturdy and Kristy

He Said/She Said is a bi-weekly column where a male and female reviewer from the site team up to debate the merits of a particular film.

He Said:

There are few things more annoying in life than a single woman that spends her time in a bar and dating every guy with a pulse, but complains that she can’t find anyone and doesn’t understand why. So the prospect of watching a two hour movie about a woman that does just that was not an appealing one, to say the least.

Hes Just Not That Into You 1

The structure of the film is a little odd in that half the film revolves around Ginnefer Goodwin (the aforementioned annoying woman) and her struggle to find love, while the second half revolves around several other characters and their struggles. The other actors include; Jennifer Connoly, Jennifer Aniston, Ben Affleck, Bradley Cooper, Drew Barrymore and Scarlett Johansson. You might have already picked up on the fact that all of the other, lesser used actors are actually A-list, Hollywood stars and the “main” actress is someone you haven’t heard of. Make no mistake about it; this is an epic fail on the part of the filmmakers. Goodwin isn’t cut out to star in a Toyota commercial, let alone carry a film with six A-list stars in supporting roles.

Hes Just Not That Into You 3

The worst part about the film is that I really enjoyed every other story but Goodwin’s. I was genuinely interested in whether or not the other couples were going to make it or not and while we were following them, I was pleasantly surprised with the stories. But unfortunately, that’s only half the film. In the end, the good didn’t outweigh the bad and the result is a frustratingly annoying movie that was very close to being enjoyable.

She Said:

For the first thirty to forty-five minutes, I found myself disgusted with this film. All Hollywood needed was another movie to make women seem desperate, pathetic and downright crazy when it comes to men. I couldn’t stand the thought of watching it until about three quarters through I found myself liking the characters and feeling for them and their predicaments. It started out as a typical story about single women trying to find the right guy but evolved into a story about the more complicated aspects of relationships. Some of the storylines were dull and ended as expected but it was done well enough to change my attitude about the entire film.

Hes Just Not That Into You 2

As for Ginnefer Goodwin, I thought she was cute and has potential A-list status. Her character was annoying and came off as desperate, but I think anyone in that role would have the same problem; it was strictly a character issue, not an actress issue. In my opinion, Jennifer Connolly’s character was the most obnoxious; the way they had her character react to the situation she was in was a little frustrating, as it encourages the stereotype that married women turn a little crazy – not a fan of that received idea. The rest of the characters were alright, and of course I would have liked to see some storylines more than others but overall I found myself enjoying the ride, eventually.

First Official Picture of the New A-Team

A while ago, we posted the first un-official picture of the new A-Team, taken on the set.  But now we have an official pic of our favorite ex-cons.  Seeing Liam Neeson as Hannibal, Bradley Cooper as Face, Sharlto Copely as Murdock and Rampage Jackson as B.A. Baracus actually gets me excited for this movie.  You can even see the van behind Face.  They look great in their respective roles, especially Liam Neeson as Hannibal.  Somewhere George Peppard is smiling.

ComingSoon.net has the first look at the new cast of THE A-TEAM, starring Liam Neeson as Hannibal, Bradley Cooper as Face, Sharlto Copely as Murdock and Rampage Jackson as B.A. Baracus. I have to admit, the team looks great and I’m looking forward to this one.

While we’re on the topic, have you tried to go back and watch an episode of the A-Team lately? If you’ve only seen one, then you may not have realized that they used the exact same storyline in every single episode. I watched the first season recently and I couldn’t make it through. Anyway, click below for a larger pic over at ComingSoon.net
