Allison Janney has been cast in the film adaptation of Kathryn Stockett’s best-selling novel THE HELP. Dreamworks Studio is producing and Stockett’s childhood friend, Tate Taylor is directing from his own script. Janney has one of the more impressive resumes in Hollywood, with several award nominations and wins. From television (West Wing) to film (JUNO, AMERICAN BEAUTY), she always is part of a great ensemble.
The story centers around three women in the Deep South in 1962, who work together to overcome their own life challenges. Janney will be joining Emma Stone, Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer and Bryce Dallas Howard. I’m not that familiar with the story but it will be interesting to see how having a talented all female cast in something not called SEX IN THE CITY does at the box-office.

Actors Kellan Lutz and Ashley Green have reportedly asked for more money for their roles in the final films of the Twilight series. Although they were offered ten times more for TWILIGHT: BREAKING DAWN than they were paid for the original, they are finding the amount offered “offensive”. Summit Entertainment has no problem replacing actors in the series as they have already done so by booting Rachelle Lefevre, who played Victoria in TWILIGHT and TWILIGHT: NEW MOON, with Bryce Dallas Howard. A source stated: “We may have a situation where one of them is thrown out on the street to make a point.” Summit is also exploring the possibility of making the final film TWILIGHT: BREAKING DAWN into one film instead of two films, which was the original plan. As you know, Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner are already signed on to do the final film(s).
Lutz and Green are going down a dangerous path. Yes, maybe they deserve more money since the franchise is making so much, but is more money worth the exposure these final two films will give them?

I’m a huge fan of Bryce Dallas Howard, but she doesn’t make it easy to like her. She chooses odd roles (what is she doing in TWILIGHT SAGA: ECLIPSE?), but when she gets a good role, she does great with it. She has just signed on to the adaptation of Kathryn Stockett’s novel THE HELP. The film, to be directed by Tate Taylor, is about a young journalist (Emma Stone) that returns home to write a book about the way slaves are treated in Mississippi before the Civil Rights movement. Viola Davis will play one of the slaves telling her story and Howard will play an obnoxious woman that mistreats her slaves.
I’ve heard good things about the book and it looks like Taylor has assembled a good cast, so this one should be pretty decent. It has that Oscar-y feel to it, so let’s hope Howard and Davis can turn in some great performances.

James McAvoy has dropped out of the upcoming, still untitled cancer comedy and has been replaced by Joseph Gordon-Levitt. The other stars attached remain with the film and include Seth Rogen, Anna Kendrick, Bryce Dallas Howard, Anjelica Huston and Philip Baker Hall. Jonathan Levine will be directing and Will Reiser wrote the script, based off his real life experiences as he battled cancer.
I have some very conflicting emotions about this because McAvoy is one of my favorite actors and I was looking forward to a role that would give him the chance to show off his charm and charisma. But I also really like Joseph Gordon-Levitt. My only question about Levitt is how he’ll play off of Seth Rogen. That seems like an odd pairing.
This is very strange since McAvoy had just recently talked about how excited he was about the project and “circumstances beyond his control” is a unique term to describe why an actor has left a film. It should also be noted that rumors have already started to surface that one of the reasons McAvoy dropped out is because he’s been cast as Bilbo Baggins in Guillermo Del Toro’s THE HOBBIT. As of right now, that’s not true and there’s not validity to that rumor whatsoever. My guess is that McAvoy made a commitment to a project that didn’t have a start date and the start date happened to coincide with the cancer film.

Anjelica Huston and Philip Baker Hall have joined the comedy that used to be called I’M WITH CANCER. The film already has an impressive cast that includes Seth Rogen, James McAvoy, Anna Kendrick and Bryce Dallas Howard. Jonathan Levine (THE WACKNESS) is directing from a script by Will Reiser. The film follows a man (McAvoy) that discovers he has cancer and his ensuing long battle to fight it. It’s based off the real story of Will Reiser who also successfully battled cancer.
And no, I don’t know how they’re going to make that funny either. It helps that it’s written by someone that actually had cancer, so any comedy involved in the film should come from the right place. And with Rogen and McAvoy in the leads, I think this has a high potential to be a pretty good film. Oh, and I would also suggest they come up with a name for the film that doesn’t have the word “cancer” in the title. No reason to turn people away before they even buy the ticket.

Bryce Dallas Howard has signed on to star opposite Matt Damon in Clint Eastwood’s drama HEREAFTER. The story revolves around three people who are touched by death and has supernatural undertones. It was previously reported here, that Cecile de France would star opposite Damon in the film. No word on how how this new casting effects Ms. de France. The film is set to be released in December of 2010.
As I’ve said before I’m a fan of Matt Damon and Clint Eastwood, but I’m still on the fence with Bryce Dallas Howard. I think she has potential but I don’t feel I’ve seen any real range as an actress. Working with Mr. Eastwood will really showcase the talent she has and now I’m really excited to see this film.

Our Driver’s EDitorial is a weekly column designed to express our opinion on something going on in Hollywood today. Sometimes we whine and complain about something we wish was different, other times we heap praise on the system for getting it right.
There’s a lot of negative buzz going around the web world regarding Sam Raimi’s upcoming SPIDER-MAN 4. I’ve read everything from “Raimi doesn’t have it anymore” to “Spider-man 3 killed the franchise”. It’s ridiculous how fair-weather fanboys are. If a couple of snobbish critics dislike a film, the fanboys jump on it and the next thing you know, SPIDER-MAN 3 is the worst movie ever made. That’s insane, as is the notion that Sam Raimi destroyed the franchise or that he can’t make another great Spider-man film.

First, let’s get something out of the way; SPIDER-MAN 3 was not a bad film. Yes, it had its problems, but overall, it was a fun film. It was a good summer blockbuster and it still has the best action scenes in all of the Spidey films. I loved the opening fight between Peter and the New Goblin. It also had more action than the other films and was void of any slow spots that the other two suffered from. Despite its problems, SPIDER-MAN 3 was fun and far from the abomination that people are trying to make it out to be. If you buy into the hype that the studio forced Raimi to do some of the things he did, then you should have no fears about the fourth film.

Raimi just needs to make the film he wants to make. He needs to ignore everyone around him (ie: the studio) that want him to make a movie to sell action figures and not a truly great film. He also needs to avoid trying to make a better film than the DARK KNIGHT. There’s no competition between the two franchises because both of them are different, with different tones and goals. Getting into a mindset where you have to beat something that you’re not competing with could mean disaster for an artist. Aside from Superman, Spider-man is one of the most beloved superheroes of all time. There are plenty of great stories to be told and all Raimi has to do is tell a great story, like he has done so many times in the past.

However, in telling the story, he needs to do something with Peter’s love interest. Early reports have Kirsten Dunst reprising her role as Mary Jane Watson and if there’s one area of the Spider-man franchise that really needs some work, it’s with her character. Bryce Dallas Howard was only in the third film for a little while, but I found her ten times more appealing than Dunst. If Raimi has to come to one glowing realization, it’s that Dunst is a huge negative for any film she’s in. I’d like to see the Gwen Stacy angle explored some more and maybe boot out Dunst.

I know all the hype lately has surrounded the DARK KNIGHT, and that’s fine. But let’s not forget about our friendly neighborhood Spider-man. With a returning cast and a director that feels like he has something to prove, Spidey 4 should be a blast.
