Allison Janney has been cast in the film adaptation of Kathryn Stockett’s best-selling novel THE HELP. Dreamworks Studio is producing and Stockett’s childhood friend, Tate Taylor is directing from his own script. Janney has one of the more impressive resumes in Hollywood, with several award nominations and wins. From television (West Wing) to film (JUNO, AMERICAN BEAUTY), she always is part of a great ensemble.
The story centers around three women in the Deep South in 1962, who work together to overcome their own life challenges. Janney will be joining Emma Stone, Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer and Bryce Dallas Howard. I’m not that familiar with the story but it will be interesting to see how having a talented all female cast in something not called SEX IN THE CITY does at the box-office.

I have to hand it to Emma Stone, she picks some pretty good roles and always manages to add a likability to her characters that makes them enjoyable and interesting. It looks like her next film, EASY A, is more of the same. In it, she plays a high school virgin that pretends to have sex with a nerdy guy in order to boost his popularity with the jocks. When it works, other nerds from around the school start enlisting her “fake” services and pretty soon, she’s reaping the benefits and consequences for being the school slut.
It’s a pretty interesting concept, but one that requires a likable and charming lead female. That’s a good thing for Emma Stone, as she’s usually both. Will Gluck (FIRED UP!) will be directing Stone, Amanda Bynes, Stanley Tucci, Lisa Kudrow and Patricia Clarkson in the film. EASY A will be released on September 17th.

I’m a huge fan of Bryce Dallas Howard, but she doesn’t make it easy to like her. She chooses odd roles (what is she doing in TWILIGHT SAGA: ECLIPSE?), but when she gets a good role, she does great with it. She has just signed on to the adaptation of Kathryn Stockett’s novel THE HELP. The film, to be directed by Tate Taylor, is about a young journalist (Emma Stone) that returns home to write a book about the way slaves are treated in Mississippi before the Civil Rights movement. Viola Davis will play one of the slaves telling her story and Howard will play an obnoxious woman that mistreats her slaves.
I’ve heard good things about the book and it looks like Taylor has assembled a good cast, so this one should be pretty decent. It has that Oscar-y feel to it, so let’s hope Howard and Davis can turn in some great performances.

Ren McCormack himself, Kevin Bacon, has signed on as the latest star to join the still-annoyingly-untitled comedy with Steve Carell. But I have to take exception to this news, not because of Kevin Bacon, but because the description of the film seems to have changed. In the beginning, the film was about a man struggling with his marriage that tries to reconnect with his kids and dealing with his best friend. But now, it appears that “best friend” is now being replaced with “life coach” with Ryan Gosling playing that particular character. So I think the moral of the story here is that we’re not completely sure what the film is about, but we know it involves a man struggling with his marriage. Bacon will be playing a co-worker that starts an affair with Carell’s wife (Julianne Moore).
The film stars Steve Carell, Julianne Moore, Emma Stone, Analeigh Tipton, and the aforementioned Ryan Gosling. John Requa will be directing. Now hurry up and get a title already.

One thing I’ve always liked about Ryan Reynolds is that he’s willing to take smaller parts in quality movies. His performances in ADVENTURELAND and WAITING were great and not something that someone on his career path would necessarily take. I hope that after he becomes a superstar (although some would already claim he’s a superstar) in GREEN LANTERN, he continues to do these kind of films. You can see his seemingly small part in the upcoming PAPER MAN alongside Jeff Daniels, Lisa Kudrow and Emma Stone. The film is about a shy and eccentric writer that has an imaginary friend (Reynolds as Captain Excellent) and then befriends a local teenage girl (Stone). Kieran and Michelle Mulroney direct from their own script.
I got a nice, quirky vibe from the trailer, so I think it will be a good time. As long as they keep away from any romantic element between Stone and Daniels, it should work well. The film hits theaters on April 23rd.

Former ‘America’s Next Top Model’ contestant Analeigh Tipton is getting a chance as an actress as she has signed on to star in the still-untitled comedy featuring Steve Carell. She joins a cast that includes Carell, Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling. Tipton will be playing a babysitter that has a crush on Carell’s character, but is also the crush for Carell’s 13 year-old son. As previously mentioned, Carell plays a father trying to reconnect with his kids while his life unravels.
So if Emma Stone is playing Carell’s daughter and he also has a 13 year-old son, I’m not sure why he needs a babysitter. I have to assume that either she’s a local neighbor or they’re going to throw in a little kid at some point.

I’ve been looking forward to MARMADUKE since we first learned Owen Wilson would be voicing the popular Great Dane. Then I thought the first trailer was kind of cute, although it didn’t really tell us much about the film. Now the second trailer has arrived and all of a sudden, I’m not quite as excited. There’s a right way and a wrong way to make a movie like this and it feels like they might be leaning towards the wrong way. The wrong way includes; too many silly jokes, bad one-liners and redundant jokes. I’m not saying the whole movie will be like that, but that’s what I get from this trailer.
The film stars the voice talents of Owen Wilson, Emma Stone, George Lopez, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Jeremy Piven, Steve Coogan, Fergie and Keifer Sutherland. It features the actual people of Lee Pace (who I loved in ‘Pushing Daisies’), Judy Greer and William H. Macy. Tom Dey directs and the film will be released June 4th.

Emma Stone is starting to get some real projects on her resume. After signing on to star with Steve Carell in his next movie, she’s now taking on more serious fare with THE HELP. If she officially lands the gig, she’ll play Skeeter, a writer that interviews a housemaid in Jackson, MS in the early 1960’s. The interviews spread through the community and eventually cause turmoil for everyone involved.
This is a more serious role for Stone and a definite departure from her usual comedies like SUPERBAD or ZOMBIELAND. I actually really like Emma Stone and think she has a bright future in Hollywood. My one problem with her is when she wears her hair over her eyes (like in ZOMBIELAND). I know that sounds frivolous, but when she wears her hair in her eyes, she constantly moves it aside with her hands and I find it distracting. That, and I feel the overwhelming need to giver her a hair tie.

The adorable Emma Stone has signed on to star in the still-not-titled comedy with Steve Carell and Ryan Gosling. Stone will be playing Carell’s daughter and Gosling’s love interest. Plot details are still sketchy, but Carell will be playing a man whose life is unraveling as he deals with marriage problems and issues with his kids. The film sounds a little too familiar to Carell’s DAN IN REAL LIFE, but at least this one doesn’t have Dane Cook in it. John Requa and Glenn Ficarra will direct from a script by Dan Fogelman.
I’ve become a big fan of Emma Stone lately and I thought she was great in ZOMBIELAND. The question mark in this film is Ryan Gosling, who has done well in dark comedies, but might be a little too serious for something like this.

Like we mentioned a while ago, the family favorite comic strip MARMADUKE is coming to the big screen, with Owen Wilson voicing the titular dog. At the time, it wasn’t clear how they were going to do Marmaduke himself and I was under the impression they’d go the Scooby Doo route and use CGI. But it turns out they’re using a real Great Dane, which makes the movie that much more appealing to me. The film stars Emma Stone, Jeremy Piven, William H. Macy, Ron Perlman and Christopher Mintz-Plasse.

Owen Wilson has signed on to voice the famous comic-strip character Marmaduke in the upcoming live-action/CGI film. Wilson was the last piece of the puzzle, with William H. Macy, Lee Pace and Judy Greer already starring as the people and Emma Stone, Fergie, George Lopez, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Damon Wayans and Steve Coogan doing voice work.
It’s really hard to pull movies like this off (see SCOOBY DOO and GARFIELD for reference), but I always liked Marmaduke, so I have hopes for it.

Buckle up! Because it’s gonna be a bumpy ride. I’m using Rule #4 in ZOMBIELAND to get this review kicked into gear. This is one of at least thirty-some basic rules that one needs to follow to survive in ZOMBIELAND. Others include: Keeping good cardio, Always double tap (kill your zombie twice for good measure) and Don’t be a hero. I would love to get my hands on the full list but these reoccurring rules are just one element that makes ZOMBIELAND stand out from other films in its genre. Whatever that genre may be. Comedy, Horror, Action, Romance, it’s got them all but first and foremost it is a comedy.

Our narrator is Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg), who has managed to survive a zombie-infested world because of his life of nerdy isolation and video games. He is the creator of the rules and soon finds an unlikely companion in Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson), a zombie butt-kicking maniac with a passion for Twinkies. The two of them team up with a couple of con sisters, Wichita (Emma Stone) and Little Rock (Abigail Breslin). This rag tag team ban together to survive and destroy Zombieland.

Everyone does an excellent job in this picture but specifically Harrelson, who embodies a crass zombie-bashing fanatic! He is a spit firing good time! The filmmakers deserve a lot of credit not taking their picture too seriously and turning it into dynamite fun. I love the opening credits, which sets the tone perfectly with crazy images of zombies terrorizing people in slow motion while For Whom The Bell Tolls by Metallica blares. The idea to make zombies less scary and more of a punching bag for humor and destruction is brilliant. Zombies seemed to be treated more like an old car from the small town, traveling fair that you pay a buck to take a couple swings at with a sledgehammer. Don’t get me wrong, the zombies are dangerous if you don’t follow those simple rules and are obviously scary because they are the undead trying to eat you but the laughs will remain with you longer than the terror.

I can’t go without mentioning that the film contains one of the best cameos ever. I don’t want to tell you who it is in case you don’t know, but he’s one of my favorite comedians. I’m already a gushing fan of this comedian and this propelled him to an even higher class if one exists for me.

ZOMBIELAND is an action packed comedy gore fest! And it reminded me to enjoy the little things (Rule #32). I’m running out of explosive turrets ridden adjectives for this film so I will have to end my review now. Blood Spewing Extravaganza!
