First image from the Smurfs movie starring Neil Patrick Harris and Hank Azaria

I remember when the first image of the Hulk came out for Ang Lee’s THE HULK back in 2002/2003 that I felt the look of The Hulk was a little off-putting and that it would distract from the movie.  I kind of have the same feeling here with the Smurfs.  I’m not sure what it is, but they look like claymation figurines to me.  That wouldn’t be bad if they were actually using claymation, but since they’re using CGI, I don’t know what to think about it.  But obviously you can see that the city of New York is going to play prominently in the film from director Raja Gosnell.

The film stars Neil Patrick Harris, Sofia Vergara and Hank Azaria.  It also features the voices of Katy Perry, Alan Cumming, George Lopez, John Oliver, B.J. Novak (The Office), Anton Yelchin, Paul Reubens, Jeff Foxworthy and Wolfgang Puck.

First picture of Hank Azaria as Gargamel in the Smurfs movie

I’ve been a little surprised at the negative reaction to the SMURFS movie.  It’s not like the source material is sacred or anything, so I don’t know why anyone is upset at the prospect of a live action/CGI film adaptation.  Plus, it has a decent voice cast with Katy Perry, Alan Cumming, George Lopez, John Oliver, B.J. Novak (The Office), Anton Yelchin, Paul Reubens, Jeff Foxworthy and Wolfgang Puck all voicing one of the little, blue characters.  On the live action front, you have Neil Patrick Harris, Sofia Vergara, Jayma Mays and of course, Hank Azaria as Gargamel.  So although I wouldn’t say I’m excited about the film, I’m at least not dreading it.  It can’t be worse than ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS 2: THE SQUEAKQUEL…can it?

Check out the first picture of Hank Azaria in full Gargamel getup below.  Filming is currently underway in New York City.

Owen Wilson, Emma Stone and Judy Greer in the second Marmaduke trailer

I’ve been looking forward to MARMADUKE since we first learned Owen Wilson would be voicing the popular Great Dane.  Then I thought the first trailer was kind of cute, although it didn’t really tell us much about the film.  Now the second trailer has arrived and all of a sudden, I’m not quite as excited.  There’s a right way and a wrong way to make a movie like this and it feels like they might be leaning towards the wrong way.  The wrong way includes; too many silly jokes, bad one-liners and redundant jokes.  I’m not saying the whole movie will be like that, but that’s what I get from this trailer.

The film stars the voice talents of Owen Wilson, Emma Stone, George Lopez, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Jeremy Piven, Steve Coogan, Fergie and Keifer Sutherland.  It features the actual people of Lee Pace (who I loved in ‘Pushing Daisies’), Judy Greer and William H. Macy.  Tom Dey directs and the film will be released June 4th.

The Spy Next Door Blu-ray will be released May 18th

The action/comedy THE SPY NEXT DOOR, starring Jackie Chan will be released on Blu-ray this May 18th.  In case you missed this film, it had Mr. Chan acting as a spy who ends up fighting off secret agents while babysitting his next door neighbors kids.  Poor Jackie Chan, he’s being reduced to kids films such as this and the upcoming THE KARATE KID (although, I must admit this one doesn’t look that bad). Before we blink we’ll have to watch his martial arts movies via quick editing, just like we have to watch Steven Segal movies.  Not a lot of special features for this one, but here you go:

  • Bloopers Reel
  • Adventures in Acting with the Kids from The Spy Next Door
  • Jackie Chan: Stunt Master and Mentor

Katy Perry and George Lopez lend Neil Patrick Harris their voices in The Smurfs

Is Katy Perry still cool?  I can’t keep up with pop singers anymore, one minute they’re hot, the next they’re cold.  See what I did there?  Anyway, Katy Perry, George Lopez and Alan Cumming will all be voicing Smurfs in the upcoming film adaptation of THE SMURFS.  The film already stars Neil Patrick Harris as the lone live-action character cast so far.  But what’s more exciting for long time Smurfs fans is that Jonathan Winters will also be doing voice work in the film as the one and only Papa Smurf.  Winters voiced the character in the original cartoon show.

I don’t think the addition of any of these voices makes me any more excited for the film, but what do you think the odds are that Katy Perry (as Smurfette) will burst into song at one point in the film?  And George Lopez as Grouchy Smurf could make for some good lines, but Alan Cumming as Gutsy Smurf (side note: who?) doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me.

Owen Wilson To Voice Marmaduke

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009

Owen Wilson has signed on to voice the famous comic-strip character Marmaduke in the upcoming live-action/CGI film.  Wilson was the last piece of the puzzle, with William H. Macy, Lee Pace and Judy Greer already starring as the people and Emma Stone, Fergie, George Lopez, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Damon Wayans and Steve Coogan doing voice work.

It’s really hard to pull movies like this off (see SCOOBY DOO and GARFIELD for reference), but I always liked Marmaduke, so I have hopes for it.
