I know we have more than a few readers that enjoy the comic styling of Russell Brand, so I’ll refrain from making any negative remarks about the guy. And even though I don’t necessarily find him funny, I find myself intrigued by the ARTHUR remake. As I’ve said before, I didn’t like the original, but I do believe there’s a funny movie in there somewhere. Now whether or not Russell Brand and director Jason Winer can find that comedy still remains to be seen. But below we have the first official images from the film, leading me to believe a teaser trailer is only a couple of months away.
The film stars Russell Brand as the titular Arthur; a spoiled rich boy that ends up falling in love with a working class woman right around the time his family pressures him to marry a wealthy woman. Obviously, hilarity ensues. Helen Mirren and Greta Gerwig also star in the film hitting theaters next year.

Sometimes when I see a trailer for a movie like this, it makes me think I should really read more comic books. It seems lately there’s a lot of movies coming out that are based on comic books I’ve never even heard of. Such is the case with RED, the new comic book adaptation with Bruce Willis, Mary-Louise Parker, Helen Mirren, Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich, Karl Urban and Richard Dreyfuss. The film is about a man (Willis) that struggles coping with his post-CIA life when he moves to a retirement community. But of course, he and his old team get dragged back into action when an assassin comes after him.
The trailer didn’t seem as fun as the description sounded, but it will probably be good for a few gags. Watch the trailer here.

I think I speak for all of us when I say; welcome back, Joe Pesci, we’ve missed you. It seems like it’s been forever since we’ve seen Joe Pesci on the big screen. He had a bit part in the underrated GOOD SHEPARD, but other than that, you have to go all the way back to 1998′s LETHAL WEAPON 4 to find something he’s been in. Watching the trailer for LOVE RANCH really made me miss the guy. LOVE RANCH tells the somewhat true story of a married couple that open up the first legal brothel in Nevada. Hellen Mirren, Gina Gershon, Scout Taylor-Compton and Taryn Manning also star.
I like the trailer, although the whole boxing angle seems a little distracting from the overall story. But Joe Pesci looks like he hasn’t missed a beat.

When I first posted the news that Russell Brand was going to be starring in the upcoming remake of ARTHUR, I mentioned that the most important role was going to be that of Linda Marolla, the role that Liza Minnelli made famous in the original. After an unusually long search, Warner Brothers has settled on Greta Gerwig. Gerwig is a relative unknown, bouncing around various indie films, but she most recently appeared with Ben Stiller in GREENBERG.
So the cast appears set, now we need director Jason Winer to deliver on the seemingly impossible task of making this watchable. I think Brand is going to do well in the role that Dudley Moore made famous, but the actual story of ARTHUR never appealed to me. Despite the two leads, I think the most valuable addition to the cast is Helen Mirren, who should do great as the nanny/valet that provides the advice.

I don’t know if anyone is actually excited for a remake of Dudley Moore’s ARTHUR, but the entire film just got a little more interesting with the addition of the incomparable Helen Mirren. She’ll be taking over the role of the mentoring valet that was made famous by John Geilgud in the original. The difference is that her character will be a nanny instead of a valet. Jason Winer from TV’s ‘Modern Family’ will be directing the film.
I really like Helen Mirren and people tend to forget how uninhibited she was as a younger actress. It’s funny to see her in these prim and proper roles nowadays. But she’s a great actress and she’ll add some legitimacy to this film and hopefully it will end up being more than another worthless remake.

My first thought when watching the trailer for Zack Snyder’s LEGEND OF THE GUARDIANS was; “who is responsible for this pansy voice”? The answer, in case you were wondering, is Jim Sturgess. I feel kind of bad because I actually like Sturgess, but his voice in this just grated on me. And that’s for a two minute trailer, I can’t imagine what it will be like for an entire movie. The film also features the voice talents of Emile de Ravin, Hugo Weaving, Geoffrey Rush, Helen Mirren and Sam Neil. In case you don’t recognize the title, this is the film based on the popular children’s book ‘Guardians of Ga’Hoole’ by Kathryn Lasky.
The animation is impressive, but I definitely get that HAPPY FEET vibe to it, which makes sense because it’s done by the same animation studio. But it looks like they stepped it up a notch for this one.

John Malkovich will join Morgan Freeman, Bruce Willis and Helen Mirren for the thriller RED based on the Wildstorm/DC comicbook. The film follows an ex-CIA agent who is hunted by a ‘high-tech’ assassin. Malkovich replaces John C. Reilly in the movie which begins production this month. John Malkovich can be seen later this year in the films JONAH HEX and SECRETARIAT.
Even though Mr. Malkovich has picked some crummy roles in the past (ERAGON) I still think he’s an outstanding actor and I look forward to seeing him in this comicbook thriller.

In the early stages of James McAvoy’s career, I was hesitant to give him too much credit. I thought he was an alright actor, but I wasn’t really sold until ATONEMENT, then I saw WANTED, PENELOPE, THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND and a handful of others and now he’s one of my favorite actors working today. And yes, I realize those movies came out in a different order, but that was the order I saw them in. Anyway, the new trailer for THE LAST STATION is here and once again, McAvoy is going back to his roots with a period piece. The film tells the fictional tale of the later years of Tolstoy and the young journalist chronicling his life. Helen Mirren, Paul Giamatti and Christopher Plummer join McAvoy in the film directed by Michael Hoffman.

Julian McMahon is in talks to co-star in RED with Richard Dreyfuss, Bruce Willis, Brian Cox, Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren, John C. Reilly and Mary Louise Parker. The story is based on the Wildstorm/DC Comics miniseries that follows a retired black-ops agent, played by Willis, who has to battle assassins trying to kill him. Julian McMahon will play the VP of a company at the heart of the conspiracy. The movie will start filming in January of 2010.
Movies based on comic series are either really good or pretty average, hopefully director Robert Schwentke will give us a good story to go with this great cast.
